Noob Tutorials
« on: March 01, 2016, 08:56:22 pm »
I saw a comment here saying a tutorial covering the very basics might be useful for people.

Is something like this helpful?
http://bit.ly/2MG_Playlist

The idea will be to start with the first-timer level basics and build up to more technical stuff over time.  Feedback is appreciated.

I understand that this is underkill for a lot of you, but the hope is that it will be good for posterity.

These are pretty nice if we assume that attention span of beginner is ~2 minutes, and everything has to be in form of video (because reading text is an actual effort as opposed to just exercising Newtonian gravity law by holding the tablet/phone in hands) :) Which is, sadly, often true.

My point is we should aim for people to start reading real textbooks/guides/datasheets as soon as possible. But in modern era that's just a wishful thinking;)

Are you serious? I've never seen such a pile of rubbish. 2 minute slots? You've explained that she nothing using a high-end oscilloscope yet you call it a beginners guide which planet do you live on? Or are you just try to sell those oscilloscopes that cost thousands of pounds?

The 1st video explains things so basic that I'm sure all forum users are aware of them. I'm not actually sure what the 2nd video showed except how to use a few bespoke functions on that oscilloscope. You can't assume people are going to have that particular oscilloscope.

What next from key site? Another stupid name change? At least more entertaining when your videos.

Bit harsh... I do think that it is a bit ridiculous though explaining the time base and all on a high end scope.

5 whole minutes to explain what exactly ? the explanations were either so trvial or specific to a scope that a "noob" can't aford and many professionals neither. What is this guy thinking ?

there is nothing contructive to say, apart from, what the hell were you thinking and just tear them down and start again ? maybe next time actually say something meaningful. Very little said and very poor explained and the guy calls himself a Guru ? He wants my opinion, he got it!

No worries, you get a thick skin in this industry :).  I went with "guru" because "knowledge nuggets" sorta felt wrong   :-DD

Thanks for your feedback!  It's a really hard balance trying to figure out how to communicate but not over communicate to someone who has never seen a scope before.  The target viewer is someone who hasn't ever used a scope.  Hopefully give them enough confidence to fiddle around without being afraid of breaking something.

I think its a good idea and don't think the time format is too short provided the information is presented concisely. I do think the introduction is far too long though - if the videos were longer perhaps it wouldn't bother me, but watching/listening to the same intro sequence every few minutes will get annoying fast.

I would love video tutorials, but longer than 2 minutes. Something that could show something, reference you to texts to read, and studies to do while you wait for the next video. sort of like a free online EE course.

I do well with visual learning, but learing how to read data sheet would be aweome. but for those of us without the scope...I.E. me

i would like to know how to find the answer to issues without a scope. till i can get one at some point down the road. becasue i just do not want to limit myself to flashy prop builds. maybe make super lamen vids to help others build the the circuits i will eventually get to building..waiting on china to send my my lot lf RGB LED's.

Dave Jones, mr EEV himself looks like he could do great vids on teaching basics and upward. and he dose not seem ti mind doing long vids and i love that, sometimes short and to the point are needed. but when i need more depth and explination..
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, Trash it, change it, mail upgrade it, Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

I think the format would be better if the video was actually 2 minutes long (I.e get the intro over with in 1 second) and get on with the fun stuff. Subscribed.

Sorry, but it really is pretty poor-

The subtitle person or device needs to learn about silent "Ks".

I'm not sure that I understand what you're trying to do there, but I've got some guesses.

I checked out a fair number of other videos, and there are definitely problems. Many are unwatchable, and often due to audio problems. There are also some lighting problems, etc.

I also saw you in a couple other videos and the production quality was much better than in any other video I saw there, so my guess is that one of your jobs there is to get some kind of social media thing going and to get the video quality of the company's Youtube videos more into the "repsectable" to "awesome" spectrum.

How am I doing so far?

If I'm on track, let me know and I can help out some as I've got a background there in doing pretty much exactly what I've described above.

Electronics newb... please be gentle. :)

I'd use you most baseline scope, if you want to attract beginers use something they feel they can aford, presumably the ultimate aim is to get people to think of keysight next time they think of buying a scope. Showing them how to use a 10K machine will turn them right off your brand when they try to buy the thing they were just shown how to use.

The labels on the second video were not neccessary. It's only an x, y graph after all. Just be mote thorough about the concepts and then take them off so they don't get in the way.

Make the video longer and yes when the intro and finaly take up 20% of the video something stops feeling right. So your content is already diluted, they you add 20% to the viewing time, I think you will have a hard time with other youtubers who can call themselves guru's that have already produced a number of thorough and well explained videos.
