Not another which scope post
« on: February 02, 2015, 11:57:55 am »
Hi guys,

OK I've read the mammoth thread about upgrades to DSO5072p.  Which I must say gets a bit confusing.  I've narrowed things down for a new scope as follows:

Hantek DSO5072P $319 AUD
Hantek DSO4102B $329.99 AUD
Hanktek DSO5102P $349.99 AUD
Rigol DS1052E $369.99 AUD

As most Im new to using scopes.  Mainly for audio and metal detectors...this use could expand as I become more ambitious with my projects.

Anyway what I understand the DSO5072P and the DSO5102P can both be upgraded to 200Mhz by flashing firmware and removing 2 caps.

I can't find any info on the Hanket DSO4102B.  The Rigol DS1052E is great for upgrading too but is the most expensive.

I only really need dual trace at 50Mhz.  All things considered price/features.  Would my best bet be to get the cheapest (DSO5072P and Mod? I know nothing about Linux so would need to be stepped through the mod for the Hantek..I think I found it on youtube where as the Rigol is very easy to mod.

Anyway all comments appreciated.  Basically whats the best spec'd machine once modded then look at cost.  Yes there is only $50 in it but why pay the extra if you don't need to right.

Kev

Another vote for the DS1054Z.  :-+

It's an amazing value to begin with, which is improved if you hack it (enable all of the software options, double the memory, and bandwidth is increased to 100MHz). Really the best deal out there by far for an entry level oscilloscope.

BTW, your location would really help with posting relevant links for purchase locations and pricing. If you go into your user profile and set your country, it's flag will be displayed beneath your userID.  Saves a lot of "where are you located" questions, and usually gets you answers faster as a result if it being pre-answered.   ;)

Based on your userID, I'd guess you're in Australia, and if this is the case, Emona sells Rigol. TEquipment.net also sells internationally however, so that *might* be a possibility.

I vote Hantek DSO5072P and the DSO5102P.
 :D Stable with high preformance.
Most important is, cheaper.
It's really an significant benifit for a beginner you know.

Another +1 for the Rigol 1054Z. It was my first scope so take this with a pinch if salt, but its awesome! No complaints what so ever.

For a little more than the DS1052E you get a 4 channel scope which is hackable to 100MHz. You might think 4 channels is not necessary, but It can most certainly come in handy (I actually needed three channels last night for the first time after having my scope for about a month :)).

Also, I've heard of examples where a much higher bandwidth scope was used to find issues with an audio (2KHz oscillator) circuit. So the more bandwidth the better. Video for reference
