Off Topic - Scala Messzeuge vs Mitutoyo
« on: May 06, 2016, 12:31:02 pm »
Hi all,

Anyone have any experience with Scala Messzeuge (www.scala-mess.de) calipers? Digital ones specifically?

Where I am, Mitutoyo digital calipers start at around 175 Euros, and I was considering the Scala ones as a lower cost alternative.

Does anyone (maybe German readers) know this brand?

Regards,

I have iGaging Absolute Origin and as far as I can tell it is basically the same thing as Mitutoyo, but at least 2-3 times cheaper.

No, I assume, if I read the name Oliver Klein, that Scala is only a label
for eastern europe or asia (exclude taiwan or japan) products.

I think you can't compare them with high end brands like Mitutoyo,
TESA, Mahr or Helios-Preisser and a caliper for example is a tool
where I would not make any compromises.

You can order mitutoyo from this company reasonably cheap http://www.machine-dro.co.uk/mitutoyo-absolute-digimatic-150mm-6-caliper-4704.html or their ebay store http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231243062434. They sell genuine stuff (I ordered Mitutuyo caliper from them in the past) unlike many counterfeits on ebay.

Talking about the iGaging offers in EU, does this one sounds legit? How the general shop reputation?

I bought that exact unit from Amazon for $40 about 18 months ago and it's very good for my semi-casual use. I have no reason to doubt its accuracy, and it quickly cross-checks with my (more expensive) micrometers, but I haven't done any extensive checking.

In other words, yeah, that's a good unit.

I don't specifically know that brand but since your in the EU have you looked at Limit which is Swedish, I like these a lot better than the Mitutoyo and they were cheaper than the Mittutoyo when I purchased them (about 1/2 the cost if I remember correctly).

I bought a set of the Mitutoyo vernier calipers for about £35, from either farnell or CPC recently (can't remember which) recently. They're quite good if you can live with the 0.02mm "resolution" and reading a vernier scale. If you're considering the Mitutoyo digital ones that wraper linked, the 500-196-30, they're on Amazon for £77 at the moment with free shipping. The 500-196-20 are on there "reduced" from £120, but they're just last years model and the vendors are clearing stock. The 500-196-30 is the newest and I think they've reduced the MSRP, so don't get caught out thinking you're getting an upgrade for the same price if you see both somewhere and the old model has a big reduced sticker on it.
