oscilloscope digital
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:09:34 am »
Hi

I am new to the world of electronics but really eager to learn more and move forward. I have been looking for an oscilloscope but have run into a few problems: a: Work bench space ( I have a small room and not much space to work in) B: Price (as I am starting out some of the prices I have found on e-bay and such places have me shaking in my boots) c: Product choice (Holy hell there is so many out there)

Now in saying that I have come across a few that are digital and link to my computer. That is awesome as in my work space I have this computer and it means that other then connecting it when i need it I can hide it away in a draw. Ok here in lies the problem I have read a few reviews on these digital oscilloscope and well to be honest my head is spinning worse then when I am drunk.

Please can someone help me with advice as to a good digital oscilloscope that I can connect to my p.c that aint going to cost my left and right kidney but will do a Newbie like myself till I can afford more space and better equipment.

Thanks in advance for all the help and hope you have a kick ass day

Matthew

What all are you plannng to do with it?  A cheap used analog scope may get you by for awhile.

You can't really get a good PC based scope at a low price, they are kinda mutually exclusive!

A bench scope is much better than a PC based scope.
How much are you willing to spend?
There are very small footprint bench DSO's from only a few hundred dollars.

The classic DS1052E will probably suit your needs for now. You may be able to steal some older used DSOs off eBay but you'd have to look.

Bench space issues? Put up shelves. You'll love yourself for it :)

Picture a 6x4 foot shed already with a small work space and shelving to cover what I have in the shed already i.e computer parts a stack of never ending laptops and computers that I service at cost for local charities and folks that really dont have the cash to high street shops plus all my other equipment for installing small home media systems and small business setups and well that leaves me with very little room to move never mind have a hobby in. I have been redoing the shed inside lately and by that I mean new shelves made from MDF which some company gave me for work done and have been sorting out my limited space at this point I have fitted in a seat so that I can sit and work but thats about all the space I have.

Now I found this on ebay and was wondering if someone had any thoughts about it http://bit.ly/WrOx6Y

It is right in my price range and looks nice and small.

Thanks for all the posts and look forward to the information that I receive.

DSO Nano :( A toy discused here every other months or so. Save your money and look at the entry-level stuff from companies like Rigol, Owon or even Uni-T instead.
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

It's a toy, don't bother.
Look at the smallest entry level bench DSO you can get.
