Oscilloscope to replace Tektronix 2012B: Bigol 1054Z, better?
« on: December 02, 2015, 01:23:34 am »
Hello,

I'm a noob electrical engineering student who have only used Tekronix 2012B (100MHz, 1Gs/s) oscilloscope. And I'm about get an oscilloscope
at home.
Several hours in the forum and watching the YouTube videos were more than enough to convince me that the Bigol 1054Z is the ONE.
I was initially thinking Rigol 2072A for 2Gs/s improvement, but it's probably overkill for me just trying to build DIY stuffs like audio DACs  at home.
A question came to my mind after some more searching.

I came by this comment from administrator Dave:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/agilent-2000x-series-vs-tek-tds2000-series/msg52080/#msg52080
And I watched his reviews/breakdown videos on lower-end Tek oscilloscopes.
Tek 2012B was expensive like any other tek stuff, and it's even older than the ones he reviewed.

Q:
Is 1054Z going to be cheaper, yet way better in performance compared to 2012B? No doubt it would boot much faster, but would it have louder fan noise? lower quality probes? I read Tek is more reliable and has better warranty, I could not find much about 2012B (3results) or even 2012C(0 results) in the forum.

Thank you in advance!

Oh god, anything's going to be better than a TDS1000B. From the ones I've used, I don't really see any reason for them to exist other than giving people at schools who grew up hearing the name "Tektronix" something cheap to buy for the labs...

I have no idea about the fan noise, I never paid attention to that. My DS1054Z is a bit loud. Never used the TDS1000B in an environment quiet enough to hear it. But the Rigol probes are fine, it boots fast enough, the interface is way more intuitive, it has much more memory, and the signal path performance is about the same.

I think you would be much happier with a 4 channel, 12Mpt scope even at 50MHz and with headphones on.  I have the Rigol DS2100, and I'm pretty sure I'd be better served by having another two channels than I have been by the 2000's higher performance per channel.
I am but an egg

I don't think any of the TDS 1000 series scopes had a fan, so they're as quiet as it gets. Most of the newer oscilloscopes do have fans. If a new but quiet scope is vital for you, some of the slower Hameg / R&S models are fanless. They're also noticeably more expensive than Rigol.
