Please review my shopping list
« on: June 25, 2018, 08:34:04 pm »
Hi All

I'm a noob, and over the past year I've been able to squirrel away a modest budget to set up a workbench/lab. Something I've been meaning to do for a while and I've put together a shopping list (partly informed by Dave's #168 :P but also Louis Rossman) and would like your additions/feedback about it (wisdom of the crowd being what it is).

The purpose is to refine the list. Here it is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oVcnMKJrjuYg04IsvceL1ApP-LjmkKRMem905bjVfC4/edit?usp=sharing. You won't be able to edit or make comments as it is read-only, so please post your feedback here.

The list is work-in-progress. Where you see multiple test equipment it is where I am unsure which will do. You can spend hours going through YT reviews or finding alternatives in the same price range so it becomes a maze click upon click. I did think I'll go for two PSU's - one with multiple outputs (2-3) up to 3A, and a second with a single output but able to deliver a higher 5A. I don't yet have an alternative to the Hantek DSO so suggestions there are welcome, and I don't know if the sig gen will be necessary or which to purchase if so, again, there are many options.... but again, with the exception of having two PSU's I'll only be purchasing one of each.

If the list comes across as "all the gear, no idea", again, feel free to make your suggestion. I'm aware beginners typically start out with much less equipment but I'm set on building a hobby out of it... I'll primarily be studying the AoE for the next 12 months.

Thanks

First, welcome to the forum. Second, I will tell you the same advice that I say to all who have asked this in this forum. It is very simple, you have a list of products that you have been, either advised to buy for hobby work, or decided on your own, fine that is your list.

Here's the deal, you say you will be following AoE, so, my suggestion is to only buy the equipment that is required in order to do the AoE experiments, in the order that you do the experiments. Any other equipment/tooling will reveal their need as you do other experiments or projects, and buy them then, when there is a need.

The bottom line is don't buy equipment that you don't need, until you need it. Otherwise it will just sit around collecting dust.

Hope this helps...
PEACE===>T

I am a beginner also building my first bench/lab. A couple of broad comments, you have listed some pretty expensive power supplies and signal generators, and IMO a pretty low-level scope. I would aim for a better scope, Rigol 1054Z or one of the recent Siglent offerings and start with less expensive PS & function gen.
I went with an Analog Discovery 2 for the time being because it offered so many tools at once. Following basic Electronics 101 type lessons it could do everything I could ask of it, and it is very strong in the digital/logic area.
Sorry, I over looked a welcome to the forum  :-+  It would help to know roughly where you live, as some suggestions will vary with availability.

Is there an updated/upgraded/more recent model to the 1054Z? I'd be interested in a scope with more b/w like ~100-200Mhz. Do you have any suggestions re Siglent that are comparable to the 1054Z?

The Siglent SDS1000X-E Series has 2 & 4 channel scopes in the 100 & 200 Mhz range with included factory decoding (I2C, ISP etc). As was the case with Rigol a hack has surfaced to take the 100Mhz up to 200. There is a tremendous amount of information here on these two scope manufactures and before making a decision you should read as much of it as you can. This is an evolving product market and my guess is that Rigol will answer Siglent with a replacement for the 1054Z. When? Who knows. For now my Analog Discovery fulfills my scope needs, so I can wait a while and see how this plays out.
