portable on/off pulse generator?
« on: October 29, 2015, 01:29:11 am »
Hi guys,

does anyone knows of portable on/off pulse generator available in the market?

Basically, I have a inductive NPN/PNP sensor that senses the bolts of a rotating machine. A Frequency converter then converts this input into volts for monitoring purposes. It would be handy to be able to calibrate the converter without running the rotation machine. Btw, the system runs on 24Vdc.

I would probably use around the 20Hz - 500Hz range

I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for. Isn't an on/off pulse just DC with a switch?

The $20 LCR meter project being discussed here on the forums is capable of doing PWM, is that what you want?

Thanks for the reply. Dosent seem like something i want though.

In short, i want to simulate the switching of a PNP/NPN sensor from 20-500Hz so as to calibrate a frequency converter. The frequency converter works on 24Vdc. So yeah, bascially a non-potential switch that is controllable from 20-500Hz.

I think an arduino would work well for your needs. You can wire up a screen, rotary encoder or buttons, and a transistor to control the 24VDC into a project box and you should be good to go. On the software side I imagine you simply code the digital encoder to adjust the frequency and set one of the I/O pins high to turn on the transistor. Not sure if it would produce a stable jitter free pulse.
