I'm pretty sure it's pronounced row-hoss in the US. At least I've heard that multiple times from different people.

I pronounce it 'ross'. Short vowel sound for the 'o' and true 's' sound for the 's'....

just as r-oh-s (so rohs?). I've heard Ro-Hass a few times around here (not ro-hoss!). I suspect it is from the habit of people around here to pronounce an H in a acronym as "hash", from the french way of saying H. (even though most of these people can't acutally speak french. They do the same for HP, which some call "hash-pee"

Seriously, Row-Hass is how I say it, with a long 'o', and the 'a' sounded as it's pronounced in 'Ahhh'.

(That still doesn't change the fact that it's a PITA!)

I was at a lead free joint reliability conference in Canada this past summer.
Most presenters and audience questions used the 'lead free' characterization. And, when needed to quote the standard, they spelled each letter as in the first choice of the survey or as nes999 said.

it's an acronym. Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive. if it was something like "Robert's House Settlement". where part of the word is included in the acronym for some damned reason like people like to do... I would do "row" h-s. but it ain't and it's not and it's an acronym and lead free solder eats.

This is interesting to learn for me. I have only had to verbally say it a handful of times. I naturally went with R-O-H-S. Maybe there are some people who call my country Yu Sah? Maybe Ooh Sa.

Since the O is small, maybe it could correctly be said like Row-H-S?

It's an acronym rather than a word so there is no 'correct' pronunciation.
