Question about function generator output level.
« on: January 23, 2016, 08:20:07 am »
I hope this isn't too silly of a question but I have a Tenma 72-5015 function generator and there is just a knob for the amplitude that is not marked in any way. So to set the amplitude I want I have just been using a piece of coax and running it right into my CRO and using that to measure it. Any problems with using that method?

If the function generator is rated for a 50 ohm output, you will need to either use a 50 ohm termination right at your scope, or turn on the internal termination if its supported

Not at all, however actual output may be affected by the load it drives so if different to your CRO input take care to start low and adjust to suit your requirements. This is when a BNC Tee comes in handy so you can monitor the output with your scope while adjusting the FG to your needs.

Often older analogue FG's had substantial drive capabilities so check your documentation.
