recommend a oscilloscope for a old begginer
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:03:41 pm »
Hi:
I have always been interested in electronics but had very little formal training. I used a 20mhz scope years ago in a aviation class for a short time. I want to get more involved as I get ready to retire. I have looked at ebay for scopes for some time. I have been outbid always! Most of the scopes do not come with probes, why is this and where and which probes should I look to purchase? What mhz scopes should I be trying to purchase to work on aircraft radios, car computers, and or radio control equipment. Can anyone suggest scopes that they feel would be best for a beginner and would still be useful for some time as I learn? I need the cost to be not over 300.00. Also, as I don't know a great deal about them, are there any videos to show the different things that make a scope useful? I live in Southern California, USA.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions and or comments.
Don

If you're in socal, you should be able to find deals within 100 miles on craigslist.

This is excellent advice. As far as an entry-level scope (I'm assuming you're looking for an analogue solution), the 465b was a workhorse/staple for a long, long time and can be had at a reasonable price (sub $300).

If you plan to work on the output stage of radio transmitters keep an eye out for a spectrum analyzer.
If your working below 1000mhz then cheap ones are easier to find.
