Relative mode and range on DMM
« on: November 30, 2015, 04:14:53 pm »
Suppose I have a 5000 (ranges: 500mV, 5V) count dmm and I measure 4V. Now I press relative mode button and measure 4.1V.
Display reads 100.0mV but what is the range I'm measuring in?
500mV or 5V?

Usually the DMM is still in the 5 V range to measure and just substracts the starting point in the digital domain.

The UT-71D (40,000 count) behaves in the same way. Top right shows the reading at the time the REL button was pressed. Top left shows the current reading and the main display shows the difference between the two, staying in the 4V range. The meter does not auto range anymore in that mode, showing OL above 4V.
