Removing goofed-up silk screen from pads
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:09:17 am »
Hi,

I've forgot to turn on silk screen over pads checking before sending my board to production, and was totally blinded for several lines crossing my pads. My question is how to best attempt to repair this. First idea is to cut the silk screen material on the edges of the pad with a razor blade and attempt to lift it by melting tin underneath. Luckily I've ordered thick tin plating. Before I do that I'd prefer to hear your ideas. This board is quite important and it would be good to save it.

How it looks like:

Oops! We've all done it, though many PCB vendors will automatically mask out any silk screen that overlaps exposed copper pads. It might be worth adding a note to your drill drawing to require vendors to do this for you in future.

Are you going to solder the board straight away? If so then it doesn't matter too much if you remove some of the surface plating in the process of removing the silkscreen, as its main purpose is to prevent oxidation.

I'd start with a fibreglass pencil, or possibly just scratch it away with a sharp scalpel. Shouldn't be too hard IMHO.

Thank you for your replays. I'll post a photo when it gets cleaned and comment how it went.

Not really worth a photo. The silk screen material scrapes clean of the pads - it seems to be unable to stick to metal. So - for anyone who does that mistake in the future - it can be removed with any any sharp object.
