RIGOL DS1052E problems, Should I return it?? VIDEO
« on: February 24, 2013, 04:46:24 am »
I just bought a brand new Rigol 1052E and ever since I took it out of the box it goes crazy and starts flickering quite often. I am pretty sure it is broken since it does it without me even touching it. I need you guys to take a look at the video and tell me if I should return it immediately or if I am a complete idiot that does not know how to use the ociloscope. (I even set it to factory default at the end and nothing) It came with firmware 3.01.

Also, I do not know if this is normal or not, but as you can see in the video it has this LOUD relay clicks, it clicks for anything, I turn any knob and it clicks... take a look and the video and you will hear it I have not seen this on other videos of this unit.

What it's doing does look wrong.

Have you tried it with both probes?

Have you tried removing the probe hook and touching the probe tip directly to the test point?

Have you made sure to push the probe hook down firmly onto the probe until it clicks into place?

By the way, the relay clicks are normal.

Those are quiet relay clicks. I should introduce you to my Tektronix scope. CLUNK! CLUNK!

my 1052 will give a square wave and triggered with the auto button from the cal test point. Yours is defective.

I love mine, so try another. Maybe because I grew up with analog ones, I am so impressed.

Still would not part with my sc61 and 535's though.

I bought it locally, straight from Rigol... $314 (including shipping) you just answer some questions and they give you a $30 discount, cheapest price on the web.

It couldn't be better.  Will they pay for shipping back?  I've heard of some folks getting it at ~$316 but not in the USA, so that is news, its a new low.

I think its a good risk given you get warranty replacement in the USA.  Rigol must have production costs so low, they are clearly skimping on quality control. I read of more reported defects on eevblog since 2011, but  between 2009-10 there were hardly any.

It may help to stress test it thoroughly when you get the replacement, it wouldn't be good for it to fail after warranty.  When new, I do a "burn in" leaving it on 24x7 with LCD off using screen saver mode, between actually using it.  If it survives, it likely will live long.

Best Wishes,

The BETTER pay for the shipping..... they better!!!

Thanks for your suggestion, I will surely give it a good burn in test when I receive the new unit.

Yes, it definitely is a defective unit.

Actually, the artifacts seen in the second video you posted reminded me of what my defective unit displayed when I re-soldered the FPGA back for a second time (after removing it again in order to correct the mainboard wiring diagrams I drew) misaligned(!), since it is quite difficult to align that chip properly by hand...
