Routing the light from small SM LED's to a case
« on: April 17, 2016, 01:53:11 pm »
Hello

I would like to route the light from about 6 small LED's on a few boards (in this project https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/raspberry-pi-running-from-batteries-and-solar/) to a single area on a proto box.  I have some plastic j shaped bits from an old router that bent the light to the top of a router but it wont work on my box (wrong shape).

Is there such thing a fibre optic or flexible/shapable plastic that I can use to flexibly capture the light from 5 lights on the raspberry pi and wifi and route the light to an ordered panel?

Thanks In advance.

Hi

The most practical way to do this is with clear plastic rod. It comes in a variety of diameters and you can warm it up to bend it. Plexiglass is one fairly common material to use. There are others. The heat involved is not terribly high. More than most hair dryers, less than a stove burner set to full blast.

I'm using a hot air station to bend different thermoplastics. Works great.

If you use bottom entry LED's you can glue in a piece of PMMA cable.
One thing though, it seems like eBay only sells it on full >100m spools.
