Searching for a good power supply, low volt, high amp
« on: May 24, 2016, 06:51:36 pm »
Hello there, fellow electronic afficionados!

For a project I need a power supply, which fulfill these criterias:

  • About 8 Volt
  • Up to 25 Amps
  • As small as possible
I used those famous MeanWell PSUs for quite a long time and I'm happy with them, but I didnt find one which fits my needs. They're either too bulky or too weak.

I don't really have a exact size for the PSU,I'm just searching for a psu which is small (Lets just say about 100x100mm).

I actually don't know where to start my search, as I said - I only know those MeanWell (Or similar) PSUs in this package (please excuse the huge pic)

Can you give me a hint where to buy a suitable psu or build one for myself? Thanks!  :-+

Greetings from sunny Germany

Kenny

Meanwell makes decent stuff. Lambda makes really nice stuff. Check on Mouser.com (or similar that delivers to DE). You could at least use Mouser to find the model number that fits your needs.

You might also check ebay for used stuff, though it will likely be older, less efficient stuff.

The only thing I found with a quick perusal was the Mean Well SP-200-7.5 - 7.5V at 26.7A and the voltage could be adjusted up to 8.25 but the current would come down a bit.  It's also 99mmx199mm - much too large

There are other supplies around but this is what I found quickly.  The thing is, you're looking for a 200W supply and they just aren't going to be tiny.

There are 300W 12V DIN rail power supplies which get close, but 110mm high, and you'd have to hack the feedback for lower voltage (assuming that's possible, they might have a secondary voltage dependent on the output voltage for the converter which could become too low if you turn it down to 8V ... hopefully not).

Also I'm not sure about the reliability, Mean Well's open frame 12V 300W power supply of similar dimensions says it needs forced air cooling.

That is a lot of power, which I am guessing is why they are so big.

Have you considered multiple lower current units? Any way to divide it up? They could also be spaced far apart for cooling perhaps.
