Selecting right soldering bit - weller
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:36:01 am »
1. I have a weller soldering station & need to search between right soldering bit.
2. I have to select bit for WSP-80.
3. I solder component liken QFP , SOT-223 , So-8 , TSOT23-5 & smd resistor & caps of 0603 , 0805.
4. I have attached the pdf for the range of bits from which i can select.

5. I have reading below website:
http://www.hakko.com/english/tip_selection/work_drag.html#type_b

So I think Shape B will be best suited for my requirement.

6. So from attached choices,I have chosen
"T005 44 489 99 , LT 1A , Round tip , width - 0.5mm , length = 14.0mm"

7. Any suggestions?

Chisel types (type D on the Hakko page) make better general purpose use tips IME. You'll want a few different sizes, say 1.6mm and 2.4mm at the very least (LTA & LTB respectively; there are smaller and larger), so you can match the tip size to the pad/hole being soldered (want them to be as close to the same as possible).

You might also look into drag soldering, which they offer a couple of special tips for performing this particular technique (LTGW & LTGW2; there's a spoon/well in the end of a it that holds a molten ball of solder). A very fine tip can be useful for tacking the corners.

You can see here drag soldering with hoof tip. Very useful.

+1 for small chisel tip,  the flat surface on a chisel means if you need to transfer some heat eg ground plane you can,  a round tip doesn't do heavier heat transfer well.
Had a wsp80 for 7 years,  love it.
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

+2 on the chisel. I think a 1.6mm is best all around, but you might want one step smaller for SMT work.

I run both an LT1 and an LTB on two irons.

The LT1 is for delicate work and the LTB when a bit more heat transfer is needed.

Best advice is to avoid any tips with a profile like the first one on page 1.
They might be OK for very fine work but their heat transfer is poor.
LT K is the best type profile for heat transfer and as others have said a chisel end is the most preferred.

I find a knife like LT KN (last page) useful occasionally for rework, you can heat both pads of passives and wipe or pick them off.
