Specs on this stepper motor?
« on: December 07, 2015, 05:07:53 pm »
Hey Everyone

I've been having a really hard time getting specs on this stepper motor that I found.
Here is a link to the motor in question. http://www.amazon.com/Shinano-Kenshi-12606-Stepping-51F3685/dp/B00ND7RURS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449505336&sr=8-1&keywords=51f3685
I went to the Shinano Kenshi website + google but I couldn't find anything.

What I'm really looking for is the voltage that this thing runs at and the pin out.
Is there a way to figure out these things without the spec sheet?

You can determine the pinout by looking at the number of wires (from the picture it looks like a 4-wire stepper motor) and using an ohmmeter to figure out which pairs of wires are connected.

Detailed instructions are at "How Can I Determine My Stepper Motor Wiring Without the Stepper Motor Pinout" http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/0AEE7B9AD4B3E04186256ACE005D833B

Determining the voltage maximum is harder. "Destructive testing" is an answer, but probably not the answer you are hoping for. Guessing, googling, and looking very carefully on the side of the motor may also work.

You can make and educated guess. It is not hard to figure out winding configuration and their resistance using a multimeter. It has 4 wires, so it is a bi-phase motor, it will have two windings.

You can also estimate the winding current based on the motor size and by the temperature when you actually drive it.

But it would be easier to ask manufacturer. The problem with stepper motors is that they are often made for a specific order, and if third-party companies sell surplus, original manufacturer won't disclose details.

Also, if you want to have a decent motor with known specs, then http://www.omc-stepperonline.com/ is a way to go. Their prices and service are excellent.

They have a eBay store, where stuff may even be a bit cheaper that on their site.

You can find the pinout by yourself, using a DMM: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/0AEE7B9AD4B3E04186256ACE005D833B

There are also several other tutorials that will teach you how to measure the coils, including some quite complex tutorials.

Based on KSC's catalog, if this stepper is really a KSC part, it looks a lot like the 56C series (although quite smaller), which is on page 21. I'd start from there, with a step controller able to source more than 3A (therefore, forget controllers like the popular L293D). Start from 2.0V and go up from there, until the motor starts moving.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the responses. I got in touch with shinano today. Hopefully they respond with what I need to know. I'll be sure to figure out that pin out in the mean time though.
