Can anyone suggest a simple circuit for hooking a photodiode/transistor to an audio line-level or microphone input?

Connect all leads to both the signal connectorand the ground.

I have no idea whether that will do what you want - because you haven't bothered to state what you are trying to do!
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Light intensity to voltage in line-level/microphone range. What else could it be?

I want a quick way to look at some IR remote signals using parts I have handy. A photodiode or phototransistor plus the soundcard's ADC seem the simplest.

With a little imagination and a few moments thought, I could think of several.
So, PSU voltage, illumination range, linearity, accuracy, logarithmic or linear, frequency?

Looks like you've already determined your goole search terms.

Couldn't find something promising, particularly if the first criteria is no chance of damage to the sound input.
