Symetrical/Geometrical PCB Layout
« on: September 18, 2015, 03:44:00 am »
I'm playing around with kicad and working on my first-ever project.  Since it's my first project, I'm sticking to a fairly simple LED blinking circuit.  However, to make it interesting, I've decided to arrange some LED bargraphs in a circle (well, more like a pentagon, but you get the idea).  Only one of these components lines up with a the grid, the rest are at regular and predictable angles.  Additionally, it seems to make sence to allign the traces to this formation, rather than creating awkward stepping 45 degree traces.  I've done this by hand, but the results don't look all that regular.

My question is:  Is there a way to place components in some kind of symetrical way? anything other than free hand mode?

And to follow up on that, are there any limitations for "weird" angles which a PCB manufacturer will balk at?

I've done odd designs in AutoCAD and imported the dxf into Altium before to use as alignment and snap-to markers. There's probably a way to to it in Altium, but I'm more conversant in CAD so this was quick and easy for me.

Altium has a way of specifically making patterns like that, but since you're using Kicad, I don't know. Maybe it has the feature? As for your PCB guy, I guess you just have to ask what he thinks. Some PCB manufacturers are better than others.

Simplest way is to spend 5 minutes with a calculator,

In a footprints properties, you can specify the X position, Y Position and the rotation in 0.1 degrees, so you get the picture, you work out the points, then edit the parts to reflect those points,
