Normally they are used to check video signals in broadcast television. They work with the standard test patterns and the chroma and colour burst signals to show up imperfections in a broadcast path like non linearity, bandwidth limiting and losses with frequency, as well as drifting reference frequencies in the originator.

They are also a nice very accurate video monitor.

Thanks Sean, having only limited space ,think I'll leave it, I really want to save my money until I get enough for a Tektronix TDS420, which I have on my radar., thanks for telling me what they do.

Buy it if it is cheap and send it to W2AEW as a gift, he can definitely use it, or restore it.

Thanks guys, but I don't really have a use for it in my lab.

I think nobody has a use for this at all  :-\

They are being sold on eBay for $50 -probably to pay for the freight and storage of these

OK alan as your the Tektronix man thought I should let you know, I didn't even know what they were used for , until Sean said,I have my ey on a Tektronix TDS420, I think will out last me, but they still are expensive, quality always costs,i'm only interested in Tektronix I'm looking at the bandwidth, as I was once told the more the bandwidth the more use you get out of it.
Maybe for a hobbyist it to much, but that's what I'm aiming for, unless there is a more useful Tektronix anyone can think of.

Yes, it looks quite useless to me. Specialized equipment for a technology that's on its way out.
