Tektronix 2221 Restoration Help!
« on: March 21, 2018, 08:21:40 pm »
okay guys so yesterday i had bought a Tektronix 2221 for $120 and it works and no problems, but its dirty and like how i usually go after dirt on some stuff i take my rubbing alcohol and rub it off, and so i did to the blue metal casing and the damn paint starts rudding onto my cloth, wtf. so what can i use to clean it without damaging its paint?

Also with that theres these rubber things on the front and back, they seem to be glued onto the metal housing, how would i go on removing them and should i even do so.

Damp cloth first, then Goo-Gone (follow directions on bottle).

As for the rubber baby bumpers... I've not seen those before on an old Tek scope. I'm guessing they are glued to the case with rubber cement. In which case you can try prying off gently with plastic or wooden tools in an inconspicuous place (bottom?) to see if they are in fact glued. If so, then continue to pry, and then remove the rest of the cement residue with the Goo-Gone.

yes, it seems so it was glued on because when i try to pry it off, it has this weird black spots that hold it together, also im kinda worrying by removing them it then will damage the back plastic and right now the scope is on the rubber. anyhow i must remove because it has this weird rust on the rubber.

OK one thing with this range and age of scopes...do consider replacing the power supply capacitors their aging can cause damage to the PSU...its does a lot of work and aged caps cause that work to escape as smoke.  Search the web for a service manual but teckwiki has some info. If you do not find the service manual don't sweat it most of the scopes 2225 etc are very similar especially in PSU.

Also try Tek scopes group:
https://groups.io/g/TekScopes/topics

The manual will allow you to identify capacitors and pre-order them...although you probably need to measure their width height and pin pitch the manuals do identify them but usually they are old parts and sometimes very difficult to crawl thru lotsa datasheets.

There have been posts on tek 2221 see here
