Tektronix DMM912 in circuit capacitor testing.
« on: March 24, 2013, 03:53:41 pm »
Have a Tektronix DMM912 which seems to have a capacitance test mode but am unsure if it can be used to test capacitors in circuit reliably.
The manual is quite vague as all it states is
"CAUTION. Remove all power from the circuit and discharge capacitors before connecting the test leads.
Remove capacitors from circuitry for best results. If your software version is 1.90 or below, use SETUP mode to select 60 Hz noise suppression for all capacitance measurements."

Few (if any) capacitance meters will measure capacitance in circuit with any reliability. Caps or resistors in parallel will screw up your measurements, especially the simplistic scheme most DMMs use. Just desolder on leg of the capacitor you want to measure.
