Much like when the invention of the first transistor was initially underreported,  here is (I think) the most missed story of (now) last year: The invention of the Vacuum Transistor,  a new high speed device!

They don't really explain what makes their work different from similar research in the 1980s, which never seem to go anywhere beyond cool demo devices.
