TSC / Filter? Capacitors
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:05:59 am »
Hi folks, my first post here but long time follower and fan of the EEVblog.

Just a (hopefully) quick question for someone familiar with CRT monitors or TSC capacitors in general. I've got a CRT monitor that has come with a bunch of equipment that has plenty of filter capacitors which have systematically blown and smoked up my workshop - my solution to this has been to replace the filter capacitors before plugging the equipment in to start with which has worked well. I'm looking at an old red capacitor which is marked 0.47K 250V PPN / TSC and Dr. Google tells me that TSC is a Thyristor Switched Capacitor which compensates reactive power, which sounds like what a filter capacitor does to me (please correct me if I'm wrong). Following that, my assumption would be that a regular 0.47uF 250V MKT Capacitor will be an ideal replacement for it. If anyone could confirm that I'm on the right track, or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

The capacitor is a snubber capacitor and it is not really a filter capacitor in the energy storage business, just used to protect a SCR or TRIAC from excessive voltage transients during turn off.

Chances are this capacitor is ok, this kinda cap is made to be extra rugged.

Head due north.
