Weird PCB design - teardrop, mechanical or...?
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:03:34 pm »
Hi guys,

I found this on one PCB from a TV. The triangular patern from the connector. Any clues as to what it is and why it's there? My guess was teardrops, but it seems really big for that. Impedance black magic? Seem small for that.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

David

Interesting, it's cut back sharply in the surrounding polygon too, well beyond what a clearance rule would suggest.

No obvious electromagnetic purpose -- assuming the designer/layer-outer knew what they were doing.

Stylistically, it has kind of a heavy metal appeal to it, huh?

Most likely a wave soldering feature.  Note the extra wide pads on the end of the SMT chip nearby.
