what is a good all round audio op amp these days

What is the jelly bean op amp these days that would be used for basic preamps ect ? something like a TL071 or 82 ?

Probably the NE5532, or a 4558.

It is funny how that after all these years, the 553X series are still such highly useful and adequately performing devices for audio.

I am using the 5532, NJM2068 and NJM4556. Lots of crap (and some good ones) in the market but these are cheap and work really well.

Good choice Simon.  Most of the music you listen to will have been through a 5534/5532.
https://electron.plus Power Analysers, VI Signature Testers, Voltage References, Picoammeters, Curve Tracers.

For a fet input opamp the opa2134 is nice. very nice jfet input is the AD8620

Actually the order does matter in a sense. Some op amps are better for input voltage noise, some better for current noise. There are other parameters that matter too in certain circumstances depending on the specific application. But as a jelly bean op amp we aren't talking specific applications of course.
