What is the max voltage rating of a typical 1/4W E24 resistor?
« on: December 18, 2013, 01:03:24 pm »
I want to use a resistor for a very tiny current at mains voltage. The power doesn't exceed 0,25 Watts, but are these mains rated?

What is the max voltage rating?

Take a look at a few datasheets - ISTR around 200V is typical. For mains I'd suggest using 2 or 3 in series to spread it out. Bear in mind you may have transients,

Also bear in mind that resistors can (and do) fail short circuit. I would go for 3.

There are special Hi voltage resistors.
Jus take a look at Farnell or RS and search for resistors with a 500 or 1000V spec.
Why spend money I don't have on things I don't need to impress people I don't like?

You can also get transient voltage supressors if you're worried about transients. A decent quality HV resistor should be perfectly fine for 220V though
