where to buy 0 ohm resistor
« on: January 26, 2016, 01:46:17 am »
Like the title says.. i need a 2012 zero ohm resistor. i live in montreal in canada, and i was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction where i can purchase one of these guys. i tried various local shops but none seem to carry smd components. tried ebay, and most auctions sell spools of them.

any ideas?

thanks in advance.

Have you considered just bridging the pads with solder or a bit of wire, instead of hunting for a single tiny part?

thats the temp fix i have going right now, well i just bridged the pads with just solder to be exact. but i figured it was time for a nicer fix.

Eh, putting a 'resistor' in there won't make it behave any different. It really isn't worth the effort.

Mouser has 30 different choices, all available in single quantity (although for some of the choices you can buy 10 for almost as little as one costs).  There will be a shipping charge if you only order one, the unit costs of the 30 choices are all under a dollar, with some being around a dime.  Total bill will be a few dollars, less than you spent on subway fares or gas looking in local shops.  My experience, domestic US, is that delivery is a couple of days by a low cost shipping method.  I don't know how customs and international affects this, but it shouldn't be too long to Montreal.

Digikey and several other large distributors deal with small quantities regularly.  They don't know if you are a hobbiest, a nuclear repair shop, or an engineer prototyping something that will be ordered in million quantities.  I suggested Mouser first because I have had the best overall experience with them, but others have their own preferences.  They are all good.

i agree, but its not so much effort that i would be off put by it. i just want it to be clean, and restored to its original spec. call it ocd if you'd like but its bugging me, and i want to fix it.

i just hope they sell small quantities, it would be a shame if i had to buy 100 when i only need 3.

edit:
ouch they have what i need but 20 dollar shipping for 3 dollars worth of components! :--

A quick look on eBay showed some reasonably low quantities from Hong Kong for under $2 (shipped) for 200pcs.
Like this one: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/200PCS-0805-2012-SMD-Chip-Resistor-0R-0-ohm-5-1-8W-2mm-1-2mm-/231723477078

Buying one or two from Element14/mouser/digikey is probably gonna run you more than that because of shipping. Or you might hope for a friendly Canadian placing an order soon at one of them, who wants to throw a couple in for you, so he can just resend them in a envelope. Although for $2 I wouldn't even bother personally  :)

Honestly, a hundred jumpers costs virtually nothing anyway. If you can wait for them to turn up, you can buy a hundred for $1 from China (and honestly.. that's expensive).

Yes, they will sell you one.  The two most likely candidates I saw you could buy one for a dime.  If you wanted 10 in one case it would cost 18 cents, in the other 42 cents.  In cases like this I often buy 10 because I might just lose or break one.

If you don't want to fool with an international internet buy you could also salvage one off of an old piece of gear.  There are tons of old PCs, routers cell phones and the like around.  There are often a few 0 ohms scattered around on these.

thanks guys, my ebay skills arnt quite up to par i guess. i looked for zero ohm resistors but i guess i should of just looked for 2012 jumpers. its going to be a long wait but at least i got what i needed for super cheap!

the links helped out a ton!

Searching for imperial sizes (2012 metric == 0805 imperial) often improves results a lot. If you are using a proper supplier, it doesn't matter much. But for eBay, the Murrriican way of notation often gives a lot more results.
Also, (for next time) try searching for R instead of ohm.
So in this case "0805 0R"  ;)

I've never heard of 0R resistors :o
What practical use do they have that can't be fixed with VIAs/wire joints?

They can also be easily changed to something else. Ferrite bead, an actual resistor..

In case the $1 eBay ones are over your budget: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/100pcs-lot-SMD-Chip-Resistor-1-0805-0R-0-OHMS-1-8W-100-YAGEO-New-Original/32570139477.html
$0.25, for 100pcs including worldwide shipping...
If I want to send a postcard to the next town (5km) it costs me $0,79 (€0,73) for the postage stamp alone  :palm:

Zapta sent me a bunch, Not sure I will use all of them. I can mail some to you, I think they are 0603.

For larger 0 ohm resistors (0805+, maybe even 0603 if there is enough room) you can use them as jumpers if your designing is so tight you have no other choice. You can route a trace under them to cross under another trace going the other way.

Permit higher densities than wire links.
Sometimes used on SS PCB's to allow routing when there is no other way.
Handy as removeable links for faultfinding areas of a PCB.

I've still got a few leaded 0R 1/4 W links from some stuff I bought from a guy years ago.

It's commonly used for optional paths that can be removed or installed easily without resorting to cut the trace and rejoining the trace.

Always measure your jumpers to make sure they're not shorted. Hmm...
