Where can I start learning about electronics?  This has been a recent hobby of mine but I know almost nothing.  Where did you guys start?

These days the likes of Sparkfun and Adafruit have excellent beginner info and kits etc available.
The Talking Electronics website has a ton of stuff.
The best advice is to find an electronics topic/subject/thing that interests you and play around with that. It could be little robots, flashy LED cubes, FM bugs, or whatever.

My best advice is to get in a little over your head. If you don't need to do research to finish your project, you're not learning much. Pick something you want to do but don't know how, and then just do it. Do your best attempt, then hit the books and Google and more knowledgeable people on the forum and whatnot when you get stuck trying to figure things out.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and invention is the mother of learning. Need some piece of test equipment you don't own? Build it! Improvise!

It is definitely fun to build projects like LED cubes, and it can be relaxing to work on a project where you know what you're doing (or are just following a kit), but the best projects make you learn.

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics - Stan Gibilisco

This is the book that got me into Electronics. It will lead you through the physical concepts like atoms, Volts and Amps... through to basic electronics, Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, DC, AC, Circuit analysis, a little bit of Digital, Oscillators, Amplifiers, Semiconductors, all that good stuff.

Try to find it at your library :)  Good luck buddy!
