Which crimp tool do i need?
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:02:38 pm »
Just a quick (noob)question here. Well, a couple actually.

https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=WM6057CT-ND
https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=WM2517CT-ND

DigiKey part numbers if links are broken:
WM6057CT-ND
WM2517CT-ND

- What is the standard or 'slang' name for those types of connectors? I know what they're categorized as and where to find them, just not what their 'slang' term is
- Any recommendations on crimpers for those pins/sockets? I don't want to spend as much as the internet is making me think i have to spend on some.
- - - I'm sure if i knew what these types of pins/sockets were called i could find a crimper myself, actually...

Thanks guys.

edit: added new links and part numbers

Your links give just a generic Digikey page.

Your links give just a generic Digikey page.

Different countries.
Part numbers instead:
WM6057CT-ND
WM2517CT-ND

Actually could have been because they were clicked on from my cart not a part search.. I changed the links to their part numbers instead.

 Commonly called molex connectors.

This crimper would work https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=63811-1000

but the rather expensive ratcheting one will give more consistent results if you are planning to do many of these

...just molex. i feel like an idiot!  |O

Thank you for the link. I really just need them to make some custom length jumpers to go from a header to a breadboard, as well as some reusable interconnects. They won't see a lot of use; more like, used a lot for a few hours then back in the toolbox for several months.

I have the Molex crimper linked above (PN: 0638111000).

It works but really takes some practice to figure out how to get good results. If you wind up getting one, I can share my experience.

This one.

63811-8700.

Expensive. Yes. But generic tools really don't give you the firm crimp you need.

Hi,

I can recommend these pliers from E-Bay works really well and are a bit cheaper. They come in different size ranges:

No experience with that one, but have used 3rd party crimpers with mixed success. Where you can afford it, try to use the manufacturer's crimp tool because it has actually been tested on the products you intend to use it with.

Now, should you buy the cheap, "service-grade" Molex brand crimper or a 3rd party ratcheting crimper? I don't know. But at least with the Molex crimper, you have a little more confidence that the tool will work as intended.

The $50 Molex 0638111000 takes at least 20 bad crimps before you figure out a good technique. And the time it takes to make a single crimp is pretty long (compared to a good ratcheting crimper), but, the crimps are quite good and definitely reliable.
