All the "Episodes" links are broken
« on: September 27, 2015, 11:24:32 pm »
Just found this blog recently and it's a fantastic resource. After watching a few of the videos I decided to see the complete list of "Fundamental Fridays" under the Episodes dropdown and got a "nothing found". In fact, all of those links are broken. Hope that gets fixed soon, I'd like to see the lists of what's available.

They have not been characterised yet.
I have to go through and edit all 1000 posts.

Yikes. How long does it take to do something like that?

No idea until I do say 50 and I'll have an average time.
It might be a 50 a day chore.

Can you provide a link to the bad links please.

Go to eevblog.com (the front page, not the forum) and check the episodes menu at the top. One empty category atm:

I think this would be perfect thing to crowdsource, perhaps in a wiki format. Each episode can have a its own page, and MediaWiki allows you to add pages into categories and get a list of pages in one category. I'd personally help with this. Either on the existing EEVBlog wiki, or I could create my own.
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

Are you going to use regex to parse out the titles, url's, and runtimes from the page source of the playlists on your channel to transplant into your website?  I imagine that would save a ton of time versus doing it all manually.

This has been talked about - putting it on Wikipedia - but the talk has gone nowhere

I have no idea what regex is, but that gave me an idea. Maybe I should do this through Youtube playlists instead. I need to investigate.

For the OP, just go to Youtube and use the playlists on there.

I think 5ky may have misunderstood the problem. There's already a big page of episodes on the main site, they just aren't categorised. If you click on the Episodes dropdown thingy you'll get to it. The link acts like a menu though so I guess people don't realise it's clickable by itself. Perhaps add an All link to the top of the category list to alleviate that?

Regex is short for regular expressions. There is a famous quote about them that seems apt in this instance:

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think
“I know, I'll use regular expressions.”   Now they have two problems.

Ah, I think I just misunderstood the problem.  I assumed he was filling the categories in that drop-down-menu with videos from his channel's playlists.  I figured if that's the case, (assuming he's manually typing it all) it could be advantageous to get the page source for the playlist page for each playlist to pull the info out of.  Scraping could save a ton of time if that's the goal.  Typing out 1000 video titles and copy/pasting links versus letting a perl or php script parse it out in mere seconds.  But I'm guessing that's not the end goal, so disregard!

Not Wikipedia but EEVBlog's own wiki: http://www.eevblog.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Wikipedia has its own standard for notability and verifiability and something like a list of EEVBlog episodes may not be welcome.

What are you seeking to achieve through categorisation and/or YT playlists?
Isn't that obvious? Helping people find what they are looking for. For example if you're only interested in 'scope reviews or want to find the mailbag when a certain thing was sent in.

Wordpress doesn't work like that. It has a Category system where you can create and assign categories for each blog post. So there is a check box in each blog post were you can assign it a category.
Because my wordpress blog has never really take advantage, I haven't bothered, apart from "EEVblog" and "Misc" categories etc.
e.g. if you go to test equipment, you automatically get the blog posts that have been tagged with the new "Test Equipment" category I've been doing since this new website started. If I tagged all other 800+ video they'd automatically appear in that list.
http://www.eevblog.com/category/eevblog-official-releases/testequipment/
But looking at how that woks, with the big video clip and not that many per page, it's not very convenient to browse.
So I might just look for a Wordpress Youtube playlist plugin or something to do it a bit cleaner.
Or I can use my existing plugin I use to generate the ones here:
http://www.eevblog.com/episodes/
Then I can use the category tags as before, but have a text listing instead.

He could do both set up Wordpress categories and YT playlists. He started to set up YT playlists but seemed to lose the will to continue with it. It is no good advising Dave to do something he won't continue doing.

I don't know where you got that idea. Every new video gets properly playlisted when I upload it. I've been religiously doing this for a long time now.

Oh, I was completely misunderstanding.  That makes more sense. I bet there are a plethora of plugins for that exact task.  That's the nice thing about wordpress

You have so many videos now that the playlists are a decreasingly useful method of finding a particular video. Either a particular playlist will grow too large or you will create too many playlists in an effort to counteract this. Playlists are particularly not useful for the Mailbag videos. I find playlists most useful for "series" videos. Which is not the way you tend to make videos, at least the uSupply series was the best example of your videos that I recall where a playlist is ideal.

Ditto - this is why I keep pushing for a Wiki setup on EEVBlog that can be used as a method to index the videos and also as a way to store and index some of the other useful info from the forum such as links and suggestions (usually the stickies).  My guess there would be enough volunteers to get this going including myself.

For example:

This has 138 reply's  =   https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/electronics-primers-course-material-and-books/

There is a lot of good info but it takes a lot of time to read through it.  What I would do is include a link from the Wiki entry "EEVBlog" to this post AND copy the useful links from this post into Wiki under the Post title.  This way users can just jump to the forum or go directly to the links that are in the post (ie 2 ways)

Any ideas?
