I think the phone thing might be a microscope for your telephone, the protrusion from the LED could act like a stand off for the lens. Maybe its meant for repeatable shots with a know stand off distance in macro style if its not magnified, it seems to be made of the reattachable washable rubber. Maybe for taking pictures of currency?

I don't like the USB thing because for something meant for a lab they could shield it and make better strain relief thats tighter around the USB. I had high hopes when I saw the torx screws.

As for a scope that can do differential and X vs Y: any Tek 7000 series with two vertical plug-ins, one needs to be a dual, in Add channel mode with ch2 set to invert. No time base needed, plug one of the verticals into the time base slot! Easy! Versatile! (That must be why I have three of them.)
