Strange, I had never heard of Renasas before. Not a very big hobbyist presence, not that it matters.

Neither had I Allan.
I'm either at my bench, here, or on PokerStars.

I've kinda looked at their processors, but I guess they haven't given me a reason to use them.

I tend to reach for PICs or AVRs for low end stuff, and move up to ARM chips
(usually Atmel or TI (formerly Luminary Micro) for heavier lifting.  What's their compelling
story for me to try their chips?  I don't know.

I've occasionally dabbled out of this comfort zone, i.e. some Sharp processors and
Analog Devices BlackFin processors, but that's about it.

OK, so for fun, I randomly picked one of their 8bit flash processors,
the UPD78F9211GR

Plugged it into findchips.com, got two hits at Digikey, no stock at all.  Got some
hits at Arrow, no stock.  Even if I could buy it from Digikey, minimum qty is 400.
Get real.

Now put in PIC16F877A.  8 distributors, they all have stock, and I can buy qty 1, not 400.
Which chip am I likely to use?

Yeah, the comparison is probably not fair for a number of reasons, but you get the idea.

Scott

I still think of them as NEC. They changed their name back in April, and the only reason I found out because they put a cover page on all their datasheets. Once you know that it's just NEC with a different name all the 'biggest ever, behold our market share' stuff starts to make a bit more sense. :)

Stay tuned... I was involved with the announcement tonight.

It's a shame that they limited freebies to North/South America...
Well, I guess I'll stick with NXP (if I get one) :)

And I signed up as well.  But with my company being "hobbyist" and job title being "none",
will they have any interest in sending me a board?

And if I get a board and find the technology interests me enough to use it, they better
get some mainline distributors to actually stock their parts.  Yes, I know many companies
have generous sample programs, but I try really hard not to abuse that.

Anyway, this is Renasas' chance to get me interested in their chips, let's see how they do.

I signed up as well. It is a very cool looking board, and the specs are fairly impressive.

Dave

Just watched  the  EEVblog #120 - Renesas Devcon 2010 Day 4

For me , the specific showroom , its out of my waters ...
But I watched it all , it was interesting the way that you was using the video camera.

The only difficulty that I noticed was that you miss one good panning head for the video camera.
And its something that I do look for it too.

My advice , as long you are still in USA , have a look for an solution about the panning head  ;)

DJPhil, Actually they were originally Mitsubishi Semi, but changed over a few years ago.  They just recently bought NEC, and are finding ways to integrate their concepts into their already established lines.

slburris, The easiest way I've found to get MCUs, is going through the main renesas website.  I haven't had too many issues getting samples, unless it's from one of their newer lines.

Oh, right on. I was wondering where Mitsubishi went. I've been exploring my way through a recent gift of old TTL parts, hunting down datasheets and the like. I'm still learning all the mergers and splits. It's confusing stuff!

Thanks for setting the record right. :)
