EEVblog #924 - Hovering Delorean
« on: September 19, 2016, 11:48:41 pm »
Dave plays with an Indiegogo campaign hovering Delorean!
Will it hover? And how does it work?

So how much power was it drawing when it hovers?
Now that you have a feel for it, does it work with the 1A supply?
I would get a proper power supply, put it in a UPS battery backup and hope you don't have any long power outage days.

I also noticed they have the door open, and then nose of the car pointing up. I wonder if people are trying to hover this flat instead if posting the nose up.
The indigogo also said it comes with a battery box, hmmm. At 2A draw those batteries won't last long.
But it said an optional 12V, 2A power pack came with it for supporters.
But I thought you said yours was 15V?

Seems to run between 300-450mA with lights on ... and Sometimes down to sub 200mA with them off...

tricky one!  my stupid question is ;D - why not experiment with this one?  I had a pen that did the hover in a magnetic field thing.
as the car is induction powerd.  why not add or build another car with air thrusters PC fans 2 make it spin?
use the induction to power a micro & air puffers. add say a supercap if more grunt is needed ?

Can you create a followup with magnet field paper? I want to see those fields in action :)

300-400mA I think.

Finally got it working after more fiddling.

I've got a small sheet of that somewhere...

If you don't want to know about the video, why on earth would you read the discussion of the video?  :palm:

Was it that low once stable? Seems like on some of those end shots when blowing on it and getting it to spin fairly quickly, the current popped up OVER 2A. But it was kind of blurry in the background. But if it can pump that much into the electromagnets, no wonder it's pretty stable once going.  Have to admit, once it's working, that is super cool.

I didn't.  :palm:

When I open up the thread in a fullscreen broswer I can half of the first post. My hyperactive brain just happened to notice the first line of text in post #1 while I was moving the mouse towards the "play" button.

Seeing as how half the video was "Fail!, Fail!, Fail!" it kinda spoils things if you already know it must hover at the end. This isn't a Hollywood movie where you know things have to work out in the end. This is EEVBLOG and happy endings aren't obligatory. It genuinely might not hover.

I noticed that the current draw was pretty low when it was hovering, does it hover purely on the permanent magnets, the electromagnets just being there to (try to) pull it into the balance point?  Or does it come crashing down when you turn off the power?  (I was hoping you'd try that in the video!)

That's a cool toy!  :-+

A bit steep on the price though... I wouldn't mind getting one if they were less expensive. IGG campaign was $195 without shipping, now it's $195 + $55 US shipping... $250? US. That's close to $330 Canadian. Ouch!  :-- That's why it's an ADULT TOY.

Still, it was awesome to see you getting it going! At least I can live vicariously through your enjoyment.  :)  Yes... they say on the IGG page, "It's not a TOY, It's a collectable". Given the limited number of these things made, it's probably going to be worth a fortune one day, so now I get the price point.

I like these levitation devices. I've seen quite a few available online in the past, but the reviews mostly say the same as Dave's experience; very hard to get working, or don't work. It's a shame because they are pretty cool. :(

Huh.  I sorta think that being very "fiddly" is partially intentional.  After all, if you could just plunk it on there and it hovered with no effort, it wouldn't be a "toy", it would just be a "display item."   Maybe.

I really like the way that standard-sized wire and ribbon cable looks pretty appropriately "to scale" in the 1:20 model!

I also would like to know how much power it uses w/o lights and just sitting in air?

Also you can get these from their shop in Hong Kong and not have to pay shipping.  They have a lot of these type of toys.

is not clear if the car contains any active component to help floating or is only a simple magnet
