EEVblog #175 - Project Sagan
« on: May 30, 2011, 10:33:57 am »
congratulation Dave !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is the best "project" a human being can start. A pessimist would say it costs time and a lot of money,
but believe me every second you can spend on such project is the real second of your live,
don't miss them and you will enjoy it! everything else didn't really matter!

I started 3 of such projects (btw, with 3 womans which multiplicates fun),
and i'm (still - even if the oldest project is now on "i need a new car" trip) very happy i did it.
Especially my lst "project" is real fun now, it is the "whats that?, why?" phase

I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays, I want to hear X-rays, and I want to smell dark matter ...
I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me.

Hahaa i just watched the vid, made me laugh anyway :D

Our little project is just turning 17 months now and i never fail to be amazed at how quickly she can learn something new or adapt. If you look at it from an engineering point of view it shows how much we have to learn to get our macines any way close to it.

Congratulations!

1) i thought of proposing this project to Dave months back but i didnt make it. now my dream comes true. Dave Junior!
2) this is a serious late night project! every night! and days!
3) he or she, hse looks like nicole. congrats
4) err, hse looks yellowish. are you sure dave you've "tanned" the pcb long enough? get back to maintenance factory and ask if hse needs more time under the ultraviolet light, serious!
5) i've done 3 projects, the oldest seems to near usable now, the 2 needs more debugging :P
6) maybe the next challenge... is to get 2 projects out of factory simultaneously! i'm in the process, hope for success! ;)
7) you are doomed! Dave! :D :D :D

We've done similar projects here. Revisions 1.0 through 4.0 are have been completely developed and have been released for quite some time now. They were and are awesome, but thank god there will be no revision 5.0!!!

Congratulations to you both!

Well done to get a prototye commissioned.
Have got my own second prototype at 10 weeks after assembly.
First proto. has reached 6 years and is currently being sent off for extensive daily programming.

Congrats. Dave
ps Thats the end of any free time for you.

unlessssss you can get the little one interested in a 'suitable hobby' down the track (excuse to get back to the lab).

I am guessing this is the reason for the slowdown in output - perfectly understandable if so.

These things take a lot of work but may with any luck be a future assistant - good for four-handed projects.

I was surprised because I watched it on you tube and I couldn't tell what you were holding from the thumbnail.

Although as soon as you mentioned a lead free process I got suspicious as you mentioned in another video that lead free solder is crap :)

Yes, that's the main reason.
And now I've just started work on my new consulting gig (from home), so that's probably a few full days per weeks.

It started as a random doodle in DaveCAD . . .  ;D ;D ;D

The pyjama is really cute - is it's design wife-approved ?
If yes - how about making some of your own design - the new Sagan collection designed in DaveCAD with little Flux-Capacitors and 555s on it ?

Congratulations.

Regarding the comment: "we've got it covered" (in reference to advice from the visiting CEOs).  I used to be an expert in debugging those things: then I made some of my own and discovered the programming interface isn't consistent. (Sleep mode isn't the only thing that's random!). As with all such projects, sometimes you have to throw out the manual and seek experienced advice. I also discovered that the development cycle is really a lifetime commitment, but it will take you about 8 years to get the programming up to a beta-test level so you can start using them more than tinkering with them. Unfortunately after ~15 years your knowledge will become obsolete. There's a feedback mechanism to let you know when this occurs.

Oh, BTW: they are self-replicating. The second-gen models are even better because the factory is responsible for maintenance. All you have to do is enjoy the heck out of them.  :D

Oh my god he reproduced... Well be up to our armpits in Australian nerds before you know it.

Congratulations... You know of course this project will break your heart and cost a lot of time money and tears.

Unfortunately in these type of projects errors in the source code are only magnified as the project develops. Good luck.
