EEVblog #313 - Bus Pirate LCD Debugging
« on: July 16, 2012, 03:47:21 am »
Brilliant! I will be ordering a BusPirate with LCD adapter ASAP. I have about 100 LCDs that I bought in a box at a hamfest for $5.00usd. There are about 30 of these 8x2 non-backlight LCDs in there as well as tons of 16x2 of all styles imaginable. I have plans for these little 8x2s, just really didn't know where to start, I don't even know if they work, but they all look new in static bags. Now all I need to do is get to figuring out how to program a PIC to control the damn things...

Back to the drawing board!

Thanks Dave for a great video,

Chris

100 for 5 bucks? Score!!  8)

The BP supports scripting too. So you could just build a pogo-pin test rig, hit a button on the keyboard and have all the features of the LCD tested. This would be way quicker than tapping out "m[Enter], 8[Enter], w[Enter]......." for each LCD.
Cheers!

Yeah, I know! ;D  Sticky note on box was $5 and I couldn't give it to him fast enough. You gotta goto a hamfest, great deals there to be had by all. There was actually two boxes there and I wasn't as quick as the guy next to me was.>:(  Now I gotta git into the lab and figure out how to put these under PIC control.

Got a nice little geiger counter and a nice Advance signal generator at my local hamfest for $3. Advance needs a new power cord and a serious looking over before power on, but inside is pretty good, looks like it was never touched much. Nice BRIMAR tubes there as well, and was able to get the manual online after a bit of Google fu and reading a few dozen pages and such for clarification and refining of the search queries.

Hi;
I am a subscriber to both DP's and EEVblog forums.
I have a BP v3.5 and 4.0 as well as their excellent OLS logic analyzer.

I posted that Dave used the BP yesterday.
Blammo - 2x8 header  added:

Open Source Rocks!

You can order their stuff from Seeed Studio:

Bus Pirate v3.6 universal serial interface OUT-OF-STOCK.

Bummer was gonna order it and the LCD board.

Now I see I will have to wait til the next rev to get the LCD board with the dual headers. Oh well, maybe just wait on all of it until the new Ver4 is tweaked and running and get that with the new LCD board. I need to investigate this OLS logic analyzer further, might be worth getting also.

Bus pirate - in stock locally, interface - on back order. Think I will take a drive tomorrow up the hill to Hillcrest. Quicker than waiting for a courier, and they did invite me to come and look at the shop anyway.

Not affiliated, just a prospective customer, www.netram.co.za so nice to have a local supplier that is not RS.

Ordered 2 whatduino kits as well, so some assembly required..... hopefully the arduino LCD and keyboard kit is there.

Makerbot as well, but R12k, ouch, credit card is cowering in the corner, and looking for a crack to hide in.

Yup, but actually fullfilled through Seeed Studios. They just emailed me and the Bus Pirate v3.6 universal serial interface is now back in stock.

I wrote some libftdi C code and schematics to drive them with the FTDI alone. Seems to work well 24/7:

I might have developed a display technology addiction ::)

Depends, do you have a plasma display that you experiment with?

I do indeed. I'm just too unexperienced to finish it yet. And I'm waiting for the new DipTrace version for the macro block layouting.

I have a large graphic panel from a old Panasonic Exec Partner, and no idea how to drive it.

I love my Bus Pirate and my Logic  Sniffer. Top products. Haven't seen the LCD breakout before. I was pondering making something like that for all the various MCUs I've got. Now wondering whether to try to make my first kit. Any thoughts?
