Title: EEVblog #82
Post by: PetrosA on May 03, 2010, 02:36:59 am
So aside from it being yet another interesting and fun episode, I'm here to retaliate to the dig at Americans for their way of pronouncing "cache" ;) (don't get me wrong, I know we have some, ahem, great ways of saying foreign words...)

Sources, Dave, sources... please quote one to substantiate your claim! The etymology is French, and I'm pretty darn sure they don't say it the way you did. Only an Englishman could butcher a French word that badly. Was your dictionary written by Col. Blimp?

Everyone hates the French, and the Yanks are crazy, so it's the Australian way or the highway I'm afraid!
Sources? How about every single Australian "Geokaysher".
Come down here and pronounce it "geo-cashing" and you'll get hit over the head with one of those yankee ammo tins!  :P

Dave.

It's a weird word, I blame the word.  8)

My friend who originally taught me about computer hardware had an argument with his father (an engineer of some sort) about whether it was pronounced 'cake' or 'cashay'. I don't think I've ever actually said it out loud before, but I'd probably reach for 'cake', because it's delicious.

Somewhere I still have a spelling test I took in sixth grade where I was docked points for misspelling 'colour'. I spent second through fifth grade in England, and to this day I use color and colour interchangeably. Heck, I even type it as C O L O U (backspace) R. The one great part is that I could go totally unhinged on someone with British swearwords and never get in trouble because I didn't use 'real' profanity.

The whole world is a strange place, but it would undoubtedly be a better one if the US adopted the metric system. :)

Ok, ok... I would have thought that living on an island in the middle of nowhere would be enough to set yourselves apart, but if you still feel that you have to speak funny on top of that, so be it ;)

As far as I'm aware it's pronounced 'cash' in the UK, at least in my school and university it has always been pronounced that way.

I don't think I've ever actually said it out loud before, but I'd probably reach for 'cake', because it's delicious.
I'd put my vote to changing it to cake, I bet the magic smoke makes a very tasty cake ;D

Don’t ever forget, it’s a very large island and an entire continent in itself!

And it’s not “nowhere” it’s down under Mate!  ;)

and america stopped reinventing the British language, I have to (or had to when hand coding web pages) differentiate between color and color and it's so damn stupid, the americans do very well at messing with stuff and messing it up

Well  the " High way " in languages are the Greek one,
and any one who does not respect and protects the past,
he is no worthy to handle the future..

And yes I will save the teaching, and I will not debate about it.
But !!

Even the classic  " OK "  its Greek from " ola kala "  = everything is good = seaman's word , explaining the status of a job on the boat , as verification of an positive status.

All the metals , most of the elements , most of the terms of every human activity  that haves to do with art - technology - human body - Maths - Geography - Space - Time -  and anything related with knowledge, has it root , in the Greek history at list 5.000 years back.

Any one who just trying to twist or vandalize the base of our civilization ,
just proves how low in value,  he is as an person.
Because an such of  the above act, will just cause confusion, and it will delay the further progress of the human race.
We do not have time to waste as human race, for the ego of a simple flag.

Simple as that ..
