Regarding the VFD Display: Dave says they multiplex everything so they can get away with so few pins, but I don't understand how that could work? Just looking at the dot matrix area, that contains more segments than you'd be able to drive using even charlieplexing with just 36 pins. There has to be something more going on?

I would assume Chip-on-Glass driver. That works for LCDs, but I don't know if it is possible for VFD.
