I'm my case I don't do scripts. But another Youtuber in the engineering space who does revealed that it takes about 30 hours of work to create one polished scripted 5 minute tutorial video.

I believe it. My foray into content creation was in the audio podcasting days, and I cheated by having a four person panel discuss things. That let three people think while one spoke. (And then hours of editing out hundreds of "ummmmms" from my own audio and the audio of the co-hosts, so we didn't sound like morons. (Well, we sounded like morons anyway, but at least we didn't sound like morons who couldn't form complete sentences while thinking! LOL!)

The ability to "wing it" while not rambling off too badly or confusing the viewer is a talent not all producers of content have. Especially in camera. It's harder to cheat and edit in post-production because the video will show the jumps. I cheated a lot on the audio only side of the content world.

Even when you go off on a side-topic, it's relevant, and you come back around to the original topic nicely.

I've been playing with electronics since I was about 12, but didn't specialize in it for my tech career...

I think your videos on Op Amps were where the lightbulb really turned on for me on them...

Three decades plus... after those heady 12 year old days of assembling little circuits to do junk ... like detect light and make noise with a photocell and a speaker... etc etc etc... and lots of copied op amp circuits where I "somewhat understood what was going on"... and playing with audio and RF amps and repairing a few over the years...

I didn't truly "get it". Then bam. Dave's stuff on Op Amps.

And ding! Ahhhh! Slap forehead. Correlation in the brain. Wow. (And then, thinking... "Duuuuuuh!")

Anyway, thanks again for the great content. Super job, Dave. Some people are just natural teachers.

Thanks for sharing, Dave. No matter what the subject, you always shoot straight and cut through the BS. The Youtube and WWW community is lucky to have you as a regular contributer.  :-+

What's your profit margin on the BM257? And how many have you sold so far? ~$25 per meter at about 1000 sold?

I estimate it would be in the order of $5-10M (yes, million) at least.
That's not a stretch either I don't think. Say I have influenced 10,000 scope purchases over the last 7 years at $500ea average, there is $5M right there just in scopes.

I spent a good £60k (>100K Aussie bucks) with Agilent/Keysight because of your channel...

I'd say at least double that. $50-$75AUD per meter at the number he buys them in. Amazon will hurt that obviously.

Internet access is another $9k a year.

I wasn't expecting this number with the way you operate. YouTube hosts the videos, you have merchandise on other sites like Amazon, the blog. I hope that's not a basic business class Internet price!

He needs fast uploading speed for youtube.  And that doesn't come cheap where he is.  Dave has done videos on that too!  :)

If you think that is expensive come to South Africa, where the most common form of internet access is via a mobile phone. Long way down is ADSL, then a lot further is fibre, and there is no cable here at all.

Australia was going to have a fibre to the premises network to 93% of the population, but the conservatives won power in 2013, tanked the rollout (which was actually finally starting to ramp up), pissed about buying Telstra's last mile copper phone network and HFC for almost 3 years and then 12 months ago started rolling out last decades FTTN technology.

Bloody joke! :(

Having said that, the NBN just rolled out fibre to the door of my lab and office, I should be able to connect NBN to both spaces in the next few months.
Something happened recently that changed rollout from many years away to happening without notice.
I should be able to get a 100M/100M unlimited data plan for about $100/month at both spaces. But I just joined a 12 month plan at the new office  >:(

Dam you're lucky, I have to wait till 2019 according to their website and if I'm lucky I'll get FTTdp (nbn tools are calling it fibre to the curb) as the Optus HFC (as told by anyone that had any Telco industry experience) in our area is end of life.

We can't even get Optus HFC anyway as our part of the suburb is a decade newer and has underground power and PSTN and was ignored by Optus and their aerial rollout.

My lab building already had THREE fibres coming into it, couldn't use any of them unless I wanted to pay $1000+/month for 10M/10M, had to get my own fibre installed.
NBN will make 5 fibres from 5 service providers  :palm:

Btw that's a pretty insane price for 10/10 mbps, I got quotes for fibre links nearly 10 months ago as part of a modernisation and BCP plan I wrote for a company that included VPLS and full end to end wan management to a D.C. with only a single link to start with, anywho 500/500 mbps was $1,200 per month and 1/1 gbps was $1,500 from Vocus.

Oh and we didn't even have their fibre in our building, it was 50 metres away and required an extension. Those prices were for a 3 year contract.

If the HFC is end-of-life what does that make the copper.
Somewhere I can hear Sir Humphrey saying "Minister, it takes time to do things quickly." Surely he also said "Minister, it costs money to do things cheaply".

Indeed, the PSTN was reported by Telstra execs in a 2003 Senate hearing to "be 5 mins to midnight", so where does that leave us in 2016/17? 5 mins past?

I spent a few years working as a business customer delivery manager and data centre manager for an ISP, now part of the TPG group, and I was pretty disgusted with the libs playing politics with the most important national infrastructure of the 21st century. It makes my blood boil after seeing the lengths and expense business have to go to to get decent reliable internet and wan network connectivity.  |O

You are lucky, I have 6 fibreas running past the door, and a manhole for access right outside, plus a fibre running under my feet to the cellular tower on property. But the rollout to my area is still unknown, there are rural areas with farmhouses scheduled before they even have the inner suburbs on the schedule.

My business park (Norwest) is one of the biggest and important ones in Sydney, and before I had my own fibre installed into the lab building there wasn't a single option in the business park under $800/month for 10M/10M (Wireless via BigAir). Insane.
The NBN should have been rolled out into business parks first, but there was no votes in that.

Totally agree, however the benefits to folks working from home, running small business from home etc are pretty substantial. The original 14 poi design (before the accc interfered and Conroy was to spineless too tell them to f'k off) would have been most efficient to build outwards from each poi.

Ps many of my ISP customers were plunking down $20k for symmetrical 100 mbps microwave links .... If they were fortunate enough to have line of sight to one of our microwave pop sites. Or they agreed to throw down $2k a month for 3 years.

Fibre extensions were damned extensive too, the shortest I managed was 150 metres and it cost is the ISP $40k despite existing pits and ducts we leased from Telstra.

Nice for some.

ADSL1 here, 1/2 hr drive from you and if I want/need more than 1.7Mbs/s (middle of night) I have to USB hotspot an iPhone to my PC.  :wtf:
So our national fibre rollout has yet to deliver for me.  :--

Myself and a few locals formed an ADSL upgrade action group and lobbied high and low. Our local box is 1.4km from fibre at our local school and a new fibre run and a HW upgrade is required to then disperse the fibre data connection back into our local copper which should get us ADSL2+ @ <20 MB/s @ 1km from the box.

We've got a meeting scheduled for early next year with our local MP (ex PM) to attempt to get things hurried along as we've already been identified as #4 priority in AK region for an upgrade.
There's been a whole lot of factors that have influenced the delays of nationwide connectivity improvements, namely Chorus that have had some of their funding (and upgrade budget) removed by legislation and henceforth sat on their hands saying F*** you.
