Talking of chucking stuff out, it's amazing how many people at companies don't know the difference between what something cost, and what that thing is actually now worth!

One company i consult at has a large room full of obsolete gas analysis equipment, that cost something like £500k a pop back in 1995.  Today, it is nto supported by the manufacturer, only runs on Win95, and no one left in the company knows how it works, and most of it is probably broken and you can't get spares anylonger.  But it can't be thrown out because it is too 'expensive'  (despite being actually worthless..... ;-)

Yeah I get the time concept, but its just rings alarm bells when it doesn't line up with the place of origin.......its a bit like celebrating Christmas on the 24th of Dec at your location......and if Dave lived elsewhere in an unknown location it wouldn't matter.......which in fact it doesn't anyway.

When you have a global presence, your 'location' isn't as significant.

The only way - it would seem - that you would be happy with such 'April Fool' videos is if they are only available to each time zone between the hours of 00:00 and 12:00 in that time zone.

Not really practical and even if you could implement such a thing, it would be rather confusing to have some members actively discussing it while others are unable to even see it until some time later.  That, in itself, would be a dead giveaway and defeat the whole purpose.

The answer is simple - just put on your big girl panties and realise we are living in a global community.  This involves a series of adjustments in our appreciation of numerous subjects - from language, culture and history to weather, currency and time zones.

UTC+14 is a real timezone. It was uploaded for that.

Seriously, people really have trouble with this concept.
So it seems.

Ok, I will try again........

For this to be an actual April fools joke, the person telling the joke has to be telling it in the first 12 hours of April 1st or he/she becomes the fool......

To avoid that technicality (which I didn't make up...its just the way it is) the teller who in this case lives in Sydney Australia has to tell the joke at UTC+10 or any time up till 12 hours later to qualify that requirement.

Yep it is a big world and we are all part of it, but the simple fact is if you tell an April fools joke either before or after the time window where you are telling it, you instantly become the fool according to the rules.

I really hate to see anyone blow a gasket over this......really  :-DD

PLEASE DAVE PUT US OUT F OUR MISERY  8)  :-DD  :-DD  :-DD

March 26, or 25 depending on where you are living

Phone rings...

Ed: Keysight, Ed Gorbea. How may I help you.
Dave: Hi Ed, it's Dave from the EEVblog.
Ed: Oh, Hi again Dave, what can I do for you.
Dave: Well Ed, I think it is about time I did another scope review. But I need a unit before the end of the month.
Ed: OK. I have a few X1000 demo units. I could send you one of those.
Dave: Well thanks, but I kinda already went to town on that one. And I do not want to review another quack, euh, crap quality scope. I need the duck's guts this time, the best you can get.
Ed: Well... I do have this DSO-X 93204A. I guess I can send you that one but only if you promise to be extra gentle with it. It's a $300k device.
Dave: Hey, don't worry. It's not like I am going to throw it in the bin or anything.
Ed: OK,I will take your word for it. Send me you information and I will ship it ASAP.
Dave: thanks Ed. I will send you an e-mail. I have got your card taped right in front of me here. Have a nice day. Hangs up.
Ed: O Dave, one more thing. Don't take it apart either. It's super sensitive.

Silence...
Kind greetings,

Pascal.

There's no way Keysight would ship that scope to Dave just for a joke, so if they did - there has to be more to it. Can't imagine what.

I think it's more likely he got it off some business nearby just before they were sending it off for a recal?

free_electron reminded me of this video:

https://youtu.be/uBYMePUFinQ?t=54s

Where Dave showcases a DSO-X 93204A, he has access to these!

But it can't be thrown out because it is too 'expensive'  (despite being actually worthless..... ;-)

In my company everything that hit end of supplier support gets thrown out regardless of residual value. They do not want to have risks of something going wrong and not able to fix it.

I think using SMA and especially some random SMA connectors which could be of Chinese quality with this scope was a bad idea. You can ruin the scope connectors that way.

I'm waiting for the headlines of people getting arrested for lurking around dumpsters of electronics-companies. Now that this thing was found, there'll be lines at the dumpster-room :D

Btw. Dumpster-Find with no use for most applications = Giveaway-time, right? :D

I'd be surprised if it didn't take two people to get that thing in & out of the dumpster without a hernia - Dave & his local friendly Keysight guy who happened to be in town demoing the scope to a customer perhaps.

Yep it is a big world and we are all part of it, but the simple fact is if you tell an April fools joke either before or after the time window where you are telling it, you instantly become the fool according to the rules.

Those rules were made up when the impact was entirely local, long before the idea of a global audience was even conceived.  Rules need to keep up with the technology - a common failing.

So - the question is .... What would be an appropriate set of rules for April Fool's on a global stage?

If I hear you right, you are saying we stick to the old time constraints as they apply to the prankster's location.

Do we have some alternate suggestions?

I actually know of a company in Sydney that has a big contract to dispose of all sort of tech waste.

I went in there one day.....its not far from the airport....to look for some small NEC Pasolinks that were decommissioned by Telstra a few years ago and seemed to vanish......anyway, thats why I was there, but had no luck finding them, but as I walked through the place I was totally taken back by the piles of test gear and other high and low end gear sitting on pallets waiting to get shredded......
No amount of crawling , begging or offering money under the table would let me get even one piece of it.......they were very keen to let me know that under the agreement of their contract, every last bit of gear was to be destroyed or they would loose there contract in a heartbeat, and be liable to prosecution as well.
Like all gov departments, the gear was simply replaced under the budget they had to fill each year and the old stuff written off......it was totally unbelievable and a crying shame, and happens a lot more that you would think.

No suggestions at all......

Maybe this is one for the EEVblog court of complicated decisions to sort out.   :)
