Looks good, though I think I prefer the Brymen red to the Dave blue.

Nice!  Is it just me or does the logo looks a bit funky?

You definitely should do custom boxes, thier design is very poor & old fashioned in my opinion.
The funniest thing about this signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything its too late to stop reading it.

Yes...! Just ordered mine! You can never have enough DMMs...
If it weren't for C, we'd be using BASI, PASAL, and OBOL

Don't turn it on. Take it apart!  :-/O

In my point of view, the only purpose of the package is to protect the product.
Its not important how it looks, the product sould work like expected.

Any info on shipping to EU / Germany? Do you ship directly or do you have a distributor inside EU?

From what i can tell, the device has no CE Marking nor declaration of conformity, albeit adhering to the necessary standards. This might be a problem when going through customs.

I am really interested in getting one, but I will wait until the first reports from people in Germany will get in.

Well, the box has a large 'CE' logo on it. And the front of the meter says 'UL listed'. Brymen has a good reputation, and I assume Dave knows what he's selling.
And according to the manual (http://www.eevblog.com/files/BM235-Manual-EEVblog.pdf) the DMM does conform to the EMC directive and low voltage directive.
I ordered one, so we'll see... I don't live in Germany btw, I am your neighbour on the left ;D

Simon already sells the uCurrents. Maybe he'll do these as well?

CE is self certification, that won't be an issue.

Hmmm... Interesting thought! Looking at the circuitboard, D13 is not populated. And the location of D13 is close to the hole.
Might be the location for an IR transmitter/LED. But I don't see a second footprint for a photodiode. Maybe one-way comms only?

Uh Oh. :o

Somebody please sanity check me . . . . . but on the ACmV and DCmV part of the manual (p.11 of the PDF) - it looks to me like the Battery and AC source images were flipped illustrating AC and DC.

Another thing which struck me as a bit odd in the manual:

The manual seems to be explaining how to use the meter's EF Detection function to determine between LIVE and GROUND, but in the illustration, they seem to be showing LIVE vs NEUTRAL, and wouldn't GROUND be the terminal at the bottom of the socket (or plug, I think, as shown in this image (which in itself doesn't make sense, because a plug with exposed terminals shouldn't be energised anyway. Either that or live is shown on the wrong side.))?
It might seem like a minor mistake, but if a newb used this illustration to determine GROUND, it could lead to a potentially fatal hazard. Of course, such a person shouldn't be messing with High Voltage AC, but it happens.

They didn't want to change the holster moulding, or the front panel silkscreening.

In the MEN system (Multiple Earth Neutral), the Neutral is tried to Earth at the fuse box.
I have not tried if it detects the difference though.

Just to supporters, and even that was a mistake (I accidentally posted the shopping cart link). My shopping cart is having issues I need to solve.

I was just thinking, maybe I should go with plain blank cardboard box and whack a big stamp on each one: "EEVblog No bullshit Packaging", rather thank some fancy pantsy  graphic design?
EDIT: I just checked with eco-friendly SWMBO and she gave that idea the  :-+

Dave, I don't know if anyone has asked this already: but what would be the advantages and disadvantages between buying your BM235 and a BM257. I'm asking because I'm European and I really do WANT the EEVBlog multimeter, but I'd be slapped with a metric butt ton of taxes and duties and I can just buy the BM257 locally. Please give me a good reason to convince myself to spend umpteen euros extra for the extra coolness factor?

Look at the datasheet yourself. Some things better, some thing worse, you make the choice.

Me too. Seems everyone likes the idea, so that will be it. Plain brown cardboard box (none of that white rubbish) with a "EEVblog NO BULLSHIT Packaging" stamp.
I'll tell them to lose the annoying store hanger on the top of the box too.
I need to make stamp artwork and get a custom stamp made.

Way cool.  :-+ Even better than what first thought you meant - that you were going to use artwork to make it __look like__ it was stamped.

Too bad i just recently bought two more meters from Franky - otherwise I would be on a wait-list (Wrong thread here - but I think wait-list is better than crowdfund option).

Dave why dont you ask Siglent if they are willing to develop a meter with your specifications and parts grade... branded...  Its China but they can do good job today and are still affordable enought to make profit... and you know people overthere  :-+

99designs would be great idea. So many talented guys overthere.

I am working on my own custom meter with someone.
BTW, it's not as easy as me specifying everything, there are inevitable tradeoffs when working with a T&M company on a product like this.
I'd like to blog the experience so far, but I can't.

If it's a proper Aussie meter, it'll have the input jacks at the top and the display down under. :)

I for one would LOVE to have a box that has Brumby's design on it - definitely a box I would never toss. Here's an idea - how about getting stickers or something like that made up with that design to also sell? And obviously a t-shirt.

I love Amazon's "Frustration free packaging" (not sure if its available outside USA though). This sounds like nice twist on that idea...

Something like this, maybe?

If the goal is to sell only as many items as will be sold to those who won't/don't care about a word on their purchase, then that is another matter. If the goal is to do what you want and to hell with the consequences, then that is another matter again.

Variation for something a little more politically correct, while still being reasonably obvious....

I tried picking up the blue from the holster in Dave's unboxing video - but it was just too pale for this graphic, so I've tweaked it.  Don't know if I like the colour - but that is easily changed.

Want the Hi-res?

What colour?  The original Hi-res is black and white, but colour changes are dead simple ... if you know the colour you want.

You would need a light brown box and a dark blue stamp to get decent enough contrast... but, again, Dave's call.

I've ordered a red stamp.
I see no reason why the stamp colour has to match the holster, as that could be construed as "bullshit"!  ;D

I can almost see this becoming the new defacto logo!
All it needs is the traditional EEVBlog colour scheme on the "EEVblog" font (no patchy stamp look), and the "No Bulls(logo)t" text below it (could be in the broken stamp font)

I am absolutely horrible at anything slightly artistic, however I think you are on to something here. Maybe have the No Bullshit in stamp font diagonally below the other part, in a different color (you graphics design people can figure out what color goes well with the EEVBlog blue).

Yes, it really requires someone who knows this stuff.
The EEVBlog "blue" has never really been a defined colour, although the new blue holster has a specific Pantone colour (3005C) (Hex #0077c8).

I think I saw mine in that box!

Dave sent me one that arrived yesterday and I have to say, it is a very nice little meter, has a nice weight to it and the probes it comes with are beautiful. I actually think I prefer it to my Agilent meter, the holster makes it perfect for carrying about, the Agilent one worries me with its rubber moulded as part of the enclosure.

As for accuracy, with what I have measured so far it is well within spec (well atleast if I compare with readings from my Escort 3146A).

I agree about the box though, it looks and feels like something I would expect to pickup at super cheap auto.

For overseas viewers - Supercheap Auto is a car parts, tools and accessories retailer that is pretty much what the name suggests.  They are a big concern, though - 240 stores across Australia.

It's pointless arguing about specific colors in online forums. Everybody's monitor (and ambient lighting) is different.

Pantone, or STFU.

Hex #0077c8 is what is defined in the image.

What you see is purely a function of your monitor...

Just a thought: If you're using a real stamp to stamp the logo onto the cardboard boxes, you'll get the "stamped on cardboard" effect without using the fake "stamp effect" on the logo itself. The stamp should possibly be, I'd suggest, just a normal version of the logo without the fake effect, and the effect on the boxes will be real stamp effect... Errr, got that?   :=\

How do you get a multi coloured stamp?

You don't. I've ordered a red stamp. Red goes faster.

Don't forget a QC sticker. ;)

The China Export 'CE' stamp is also required for the over zealous German Customs Officers. May as well go the whole hog and get those pre printed and signed CN23 forms.  Description: Meter, Value $5.00, Gift: X  :-+

Not hard, actually.  Google it.

As for the graphic, the colour shown here is just because it can be.  A rubber stamp could have simply black (or brown or blue or purple or red) ink over everything.

The multi coloured logo is nice, but as a stamp on the box it's IMHO a bit contradictory to the idea of 'No Bullshit packaging'. I would keep it as simple as i can be.

You also might want to consider printing/stamping 'BM235' on the box. Just so that once your assortment has grown you don't have to open every box to find the right item.

Only comment I have is that the blue doesn't really go with the orange so it looks a bit out of place to my eyes. I'd say change the orange to something that fits a bit better since it seems you prefer blue in general.

Oh no, That's not how I meant it. Please keep the stamp, in fact, I got interested in this thread after reading about ditching the fancy (but shoddy looking) box and going for a simple one instead. So kudos to the one who came up with the idea.

What I meant was that a multi-colored stamp would be overkill imho. But just a normal stamp with recognizable logo =  :-+ :-+

Damn close, the Bryman is just a tad lighter, a little bit of dirt will make the difference negligible. Speaking of which, my 235 is already starting to get a bit dirty. Oh well, can't keep that fresh look forever. A dirty meter is a well loved meter, after all  :D

AUD for now, but I'm playing with a plugin that allows USD and shows other currencies.
I'm not sure if there is a way to actually display the AUD in front.

Hi Dave, Is the price in AUD or USD?
I took it to be AUD and went through the process until PayPal quoted be the total price as $155 USD before the point of actual purchase.

Edit: Umm, I see it is supposed to be AUD, this is what I get from PayPal:

Crazy that Woocommerce nor plugins allow the display of currency before the actual PayPal checkout. They all assume that the US dollar is the only $  :palm:

Dave can run with the "No Bullshit" without any problems.  We've seen that over and over.

He couldn't try flying "No Waffle" and get away with it.  We've seen that too.

But when you put it all together, it is informative, entertaining and well worth the time to watch each video he puts up.

I had a little business and I discovered that when you have a problem involving the decision of a client (packaging in this case) is wise to let them choose what they want, probably keep all packaging options available is a good way to procede.

If it's a case of having two different rubber stamps, then...whatever.  :-//

(But at least make the politically correct people wait for the second or third batch to arrive before they get theirs...  :box: )

Hi Dave,
I couldn't figure out, if you will accept orders from Germany this time. I don't want to be the cause of trouble again, like when I ordered the µcurrent. Actually, now it looks quite similar to me: according to your order-form the delivery to Germany seems to be possible and the australian post website tells me that this pack-and-track-thing is availabale for Germany too.
So makes it sense to order one multimeter from you? Or maybe Simon from Sparky labs will be (or already is) the EU distributor for the multimeter, like for the µcurrent?

Greetings
Stefan

Hi Dave,

Got my EEVblog meter yesterday - looks great but I haven't had a chance to play with it as yet.

Did have a quick squiz at your version of the manual though and just happened to open it at the Trouble Shooting page.

I noted the new technical term you inserted instead of "...fails to operate..."   ie "...looks to be buggered..."   :-DD

Loved it - can't wait to read the rest of it for more gems like that!

SERIOUSLY, NO BULLSHIT!

there are some stuff, a depth comparison against others would be nice to have.

Most cheapo DMMs are crappy and I hate to lack wireless non-ir datalogging able to use it on the com0uter, maybe a keyboard modewould be nice for spreadsheets too.

Kind regards.

Teardown photos are on the website and in the manual.
Brymen will not give me the schematic, nor tell me what the main chipset is.

A review and comparison will come. But probably no point if I don't have stock to actually sell.

Just ordered one and noticed on checkout its on backorder, how long roughly until you get more stock.

April.
I'm removing the Backorder option now I think, as I will no doubt get complaints about the delay.

Just throwing this out there based on some comments, but it doesn't seem to have the same impact.

I can't see Dave getting enthusiastic...

I expect some will think even this is still too vulgar.

The more I think about it, the more I feel Dave won't be impressed that I've bothered to make the effort.

I'm not sure it was worth the effort (not that it took much) - but I'll leave it here for the moment in case anyone has some other suggestions...

I just received the BM235.  Nice meter!
What is the max temperature for the thermocouple probe?  I am thinking that the plastic insulation is the limiting factor.

That kind of thing should be on the brown cardboard box for sure!  (If he does that)

When I first saw his blue DMM, I thought Dave had made his own DMM from scratch! A little disappointed to find out that wasn't true.

I'll still buy one when they come back in stock. :)

A TC has two temperature maximum limits. First is the basic metal melting point of the two different metal conductors used, which is different for the types J,K,etc. The second limit is the insulation used to prevent the wires from touching except at the measurement end. I've seen K couples made with ceramic insulators for the highest temp applications.

Well the stamp idea was a fail.
It works fine on a flat hard surface, but on the box itself it just doesn't work. The middle of the stamp doesn't get printed because the cardboard curves when you press on it.
Perhaps a sticker is in order.

You can't make a wood block to put inside the box part you want to stamp and support it that way?

Hmm, I went through the manual and copared it to the 257 one. It seems that it is practically identical meter. Somwhere 235's specs are even better but curiously internals are different.
Dave are you planning side by side comparison ? You also mentioned that 235 should be cheaper but I am wondering what makes it cheaper ?

Hmm, I wish I needed another DMM.  O0

Noob. You need a foam or wood shape to slide the box on to stamp it.
But seeing that your box is glossed, stamping is going to be hard (unless special inks yadada).
Sticker is good, and if your son is anything like my daughter with stickers, you already have your "proudly made in Oz" application machine.

Thought the difference was bar graph on display, and some minor details.

Yeah... the whole point is Dave is stamping the boxes as they arrive from the factory. He doesn't get all the boxes flat packed and then stuffs the meters in himself. Taking the meters out, stamping the box, and putting it all back together just isn't worth the time.

Stickers it is. They can be bought cheap enough anyway. Get the ones with clear backing (not white) and it'll look less like a sticker on the brown box.

No bargraph, so probably cheaper LCD driver chip. I think they also used a different main chipset.

This multimeter is very good as the others brymen's multimeter.
But as i said in some other topic around this forum ,there is no metal thread inserts inside the plastic components where screws are inserted.
I know that i don't must to open very often my multimeter to touch stuff etc...,but for this price i will be very glad if in my multimeter will be this little stuff which make it better and very durable in time .

I agree. It's a matter or proper design on not. The (older at least) model 87 uses self tappers but they are as I recall quite long so have lots of 'meat' to grab onto.

Self tappers can easily chew up the plastic if you don't start them off nicely by hand when you put them back.

Im willing to pay something like 300 euros for an high quality made multimeter .
So why some taiwanese 40 $ multimeter (ELENCO M-2625A )can have the metal inserts thread for screws and one expensive like Fluke 87v can't ?
I also seen on the net too much people complaning about the enclosure case of this meter and personally i also think that them are right, however it's obvious so no more comments.........

Maybe metal insets are weaker. How will you fix then to the plastic?

The two main problems I've encountered with self tappers into plastic not lasting are when you have ham-fisted types that think they're doing up a wheel nut on their car - or when you cross thread them when re-fitting, which chews out another thread.

The latter is easily prevented with a little care...

Self tappers can easily chew up the plastic if you don't start them off nicely by hand when you put them back.

There's no point, with Fluke DMMs. Whatever they are doing with those self tapper screws into plastic, they're doing it right, because I've never had one fail or strip, and I've never heard of it happening with genuine Fluke DMMs. So why fix a problem that doesn't exist?

Self tappers are also more likely to hold the meter together in an explosion scenario within the meter. Think about it. Screws into metal threaded inserts, but what holds the inserts in? Its the outer ridges of the insert press fit into the plastic. It's going to have a lot less grip than some of the meaty self tappers Fluke uses.

Yes. No  fancy pantsy graphics designer will please everybody.

Even simpler: Double-box them. Make a "No bullshit" shipping box that fits the other box snugly. That way you won't have to re-box all those meters.

I can't believe it. I got a letter from the local customs office, that they have something for me. From Australia  :D
Now I have to manage to get there within 14 days. Problem: they open their office from monday to thursday from 9am to 2pm and friday from 9am to 1:30pm >:(
Otherwise I could pay 28,50 € for the postal-customs-service, so I can pick up the packet at the post office and pay the taxes etc. there. Ridiculous.
If I'm lucky my boss will let me leave earlier from work.

Fluke meters do get stripped.  Some people just put the screws back then drive them in, cutting a new groove into the plastic boss.

If you want to avoid stripping the boss, then place the screw and back it off until it drops down into the existing groove, then replace the screw as normal.  As a bonus it will also be easier to drive in and feel when it has stopped, thus ensuring a reasonable torque.

YES! I have it!  :-+
But I have to make a confession: I turned it on before i took it apart.
I must say that this is a really nice meter. It's worth every cent.
No problems with the customs this time. :)
And, by the way, I think, that I have one meter of the 'Sydney mass turbulence of 2016', because the box had a crushed corner and the manual was missing. Anyway, there is only one genuine version of the manual, and this you get only online.

Greetings from Germany

No, the backlight talks to me. Maybe I'll hack into it and change the cap but in the moment it doesn't disturb me that much. And at first I want to find out, if the serial interface is only missing the IR-LED or if it isn't implemented at all. But there is no need for me to hurry.
And I forgot to mention, that the LoZ-mode is extremely nice. That, in combination with the CAT IV-rating and the nice probes with the 4mm tips makes it a nice electrician's meter.
