EEVblog2 - MORE Peter Popoff SCAM MAIL!
« on: April 21, 2018, 10:42:47 am »
I honestly don't know how organisations like this survive. I mean I get there are a lot of gullible and mentally weak people in this world, but to occupy two (high up) floors in Darling Park (Sydney) shows they have made some serious cash. A full floor in one of those buildings is over 1800 sq. metres. I don't know the exact price, but it won't be cheap. At a guess, you're probably looking at $200-300k per month for one of those floors at the very least.

Curiously, it looks like "Word for the World Ministries" might be moving out pretty soon if they haven't already as their floors are currently listed for lease as of this month. Maybe finally they've gone broke or the Australian Tax Office have caught up with them?

This was by far the most entertained I have been watching one of Dave’s videos.  I’m sure it was largely because I am like-minded in regard to his lack of belief.

I have no issues with anyone’s belief in any deity, assuming it brings no harm to others, but many of the institutions and businesses surrounding such beliefs anger me from their pure opportunism.  Unfortunately, these organizations are afforded certain privileges and protections in the name of “religion” even in our more progressive western societies.

Popoff is just a more obviously “evil” example of this opportunism.

Do you know of any seriously-believed-in deity or religion that meets that requirement?

The only one I know of is Jainism.
The more fundamentalist a jains becomes the less dangerous he/she becomes, i.e. the opposite of all (?) other religions.

There is a "prayer request" form on his site: peterpopoff.org/prayer-request-form/
Also a donation option, I'm sure if you donated any tiny amount of money you'd instantly be on his mailing list as well.

I think I'll request a prayer for a relative.

Chris Gammell was right these videos are a complete waste of time. The simple fact that Dave says he's done videos on them before just makes the point.

Why make them, why watch them, why even open the mail in the first place. If it was email you would just delete it.

It is a simple and obviously profitable money making scam and that it uses religion to entice people to respond is irrelevant. The people who respond are not going to be disuaded by calling them gullible and mentally weak any more than you can tell someone to stop smoking, drinking, gambling, lose weight, stop being homosexual or change their religion. If it doesn't come from within then the impetus to change will fade quickly.

The best you can hope for is to catch someone when they are on the precipice of change and give them a little nudge. Better still is to give them support.

I'm not sure you can stop being homosexual.

Because if it helps one person who google or Youtube's searches their name, then it's worth it.
And I can't stress this enough, it's fun to make these videos.

You know this of course, but you just don't want to admit it because all you do around here is dump on everything I do  ::)

No you can't, of course. I have a vague recollection of a program where pseudo medical claims of deprogramming homosexuals was offered. It was a money making scam that was never going to produce the results offered.  I agree that probably is one I should have left out.

I won't admit it because I don't dump on anything you do.

I was just participating in the forum discussion. In a general manner not specifically directed at you. If anything I was responding to @geekGee.  But also in a general way.

Not only do I object to the use of the word dump to imply that I offer worthless ill considered criticism for the purpose of my own amusement but I object to you implying I think criticising you is something I consider time well spent sufficient to justify doing it about everything you do.

Neither is true.

If you must feel offended by anything I say then be offended by this. The more you make debunking videos and pulp like this Peter Popoff  video the less I think criticising you is
of any value. I think you'd do your viewers, me, and not least of all yourself, a favour if instead of making this, you made a Mailbag video.

If you want to listen to all the people crying out for the EEVBlog to abandon Mailbag and embrace debunking and scams in their place I think you'll find the silence deafening.

That's what criticism from me sounds like and still not done for my own amusement.

The Christians have that one covered!

At their "pray away the gay" camps they use a lot more than prayer. They often show you pictures of naked men while giving you electric shocks, freezing your hands, sticking needles in you, etc.

Christian values, huh?
