Point is, why can YT search algo return boobs and crimes videos mixed with EEVblog videos on a search for EEvblog videos? Clearly the YT algo has a hypocrisy mode if i use Chrome, FF and IE.  :)

There must be something up with your computer.  I would do some serious checking for viruses and malware (especially tracking stuff).  I tried searching for eevblog on several different (7 or 8 different places) computers yesterday at customer sites and such, places where there would be random previous history and never have gone to EEVblog before from that IP, different OSes, etc. both in private windows and their usual profiles.  Never once did it pull up anything weird.  EEVblog channel at the very top every time and a bunch of popular EEVblog videos below.

I simply cannot reproduce anything even remotely like MT is seeing.

 - Twitter
 - Youtube channel
 - Youtube video
 - Wikipedia
 - Patreon
 - Linkedin
 - Facebook
 - Hackaday
 - Flickr
 - Twitter
 - iTunes
 - Socialblade
 - Amazon
 - Kodi Wiki
 - Vimeo
 - Kickstarter
 - Teespring

 - Dailymotion
 - Pozible
 - Electronex
 - Podtail
 - Podchaser
 - forums.xilinx.com
 - aimtti.com

... and they were ALL for Dave.

The 30th entry was for a Thunderbird add-on "For fans of the EEVblog website" on addons.mozilla.org

I just did a search on "eevblog" using Chrome.

What do you mean "did a search using Chrome".  Were you searching google or something?!

I thought we were talking about going to youtube.com and then entering eevblog into the search box...  On youtube...  Searching on youtube.  Why would it say anything about twitter...  or kodi...  or wikipedia?!  I've never seen YouTube try to redirect me to Wikipedia!

Dave also has another channel which I either recently discovered again or completely forgot about, don't tell anybody I mentioned it. There are also a couple of included electronics episodes which as far as I know are not on either of the main channels.

Altzone Videos.

The craziest thing is that anything religious is allowed, even if it's sick shit like this:

VIDEO REMOVED

Not even an age advisory on it.  :-X

Would be an interesting experiment to see if a video of a dead mouse being nailed to a plank would be pulled. If yes, why is this allowed?  :-//

No offence intended to non BDSM-oriented Christians, BTW.

Thought everyone would be interested to know that it isn't just fun words like Dave uses.

Here a link to one of a series of public service video's updating the Oroville dam repair in California that have been made by a guy that never says any thing bad.  He mentions his youtube problems at about 17:06.

Yeah, Juan Browne has had by far the most informative coverage of the situation, yet falls victim to YouTube's sillyness.  Absolutely absurd!

This was possibly the most inexplicable example I have seen. (which is still not that many)
I think his point about loss of the first spike in viewing and hence ad revenue should mean YT must introduce a method to get the video processed before the video is made public.

That is exactly what many creators seem to be doing right now.  They're posting their videos, unlisted, for several days to allow the algorithm to flag the video, request a manual review, get it re-monetized, then release it publicly.

That blancolino example is hard, i knew his videos as well, impossible for me to tell why youtube would do that.

OTOH youtube seems to try automating moderation, wasn´t there something on the news about someone making big claims about doing so a while back? I thought here. I moderate next to 20-50 others in a huge forum (>2,8M users, ~10k posts/d) as well and know the challenges associated with that, in short: forget it, even for solely text based content with user generated alarms there is always wisdom/reasoning/fact checking required to solve disputes. Thanks to libwwwperl I can and do automate a few things regarding sorting of content, but it will always be fuzzy and requires human oversight, otherwise it will go crazy - of course my solutions are nowhere near a semantic analysis approach of google, but i do the work manually on a daily basis.
I.e.: If one user ill-advises people and another loses temper and calls BS on that... the algorithm (or moderators with a low specific weight between ears) might probably try to keep the nicer sounding explanation and that creates a nice little echo chamber full of manure. I guess rise of such ecosystems in certain communities explains why e.g. Thunderf00t @ youtube has so much to do these days :-)

It´s hard to tell if youtube is inclined to do something about that algorithm going wild, they seem to still monetize off the video.

Many have failed in trying to work without content moderation of some form, if they are not outright ignoring any problem and get a big slap and a fine by a judge for having done so. Facebook, Twitter or Google all met a legal barrier of some form for whatever ill content people do upload. It is the base of why some even started to become so fast so big, they rushed these legal issues and never cared about such things that would give other people nightmares about what they publish.
Of course Freedom of speech is a thing in most countries, but it is that usually toward the government or between each other at your own cost, not limitless on a private entity´s server that takes a publishers role. It would be like suing a newspaper for not printing/publishing whatever you wanted them to print/publish.

Criticism of these companies should in my mind however also regard that youtube does host content for free, even if not monetized. See e.g. this by Louis Rossmann.

And before people ask, no I can't just upload the video and wait a bit and then file dispute before releasing. It seems to take a day or two after release to trigger it.

Dave - Do you have any stats on your videos to show the monetisation value of a video on a daily basis - perhaps views per day for, say 30days.  I would imagine the first days after release would show a climb as people became aware, followed by a period of significant numbers and then falling over time.

The thought that occurs to me is that this demonetisation sounds like the perfect recipe to chop out some revenue from the most valuable period of a video's release.

I would be curious to see a bar chart of views per day - with the demonetised days (as you might typically experience) in a different bar colour.

If it hasn't already been done somebody should make a completely inane and inaudible video like record a clock for ten minutes or something and see if it gets demonised by these evil fiends.

What about uploading it, letting it go live for a couple of minutes, then making it unlisted, to see if that causes the demonetized issue to show up?
Cheers Scott

Not sure how that would help as making it public sends out the notification emails, so wouldn't affect the view profile of subscribers

Well, if you are going to make videos that show bias, you must expect trouble.  :)

Seriously, from some of the things I've seen recently, "bias" could well be a trigger word.

Not everyone uses email notifications, I don’t, I just thought doing that would reduce the impact, those that get notified will see it, if it gets hit then at least less views will be demonetized, so ithose that view it from twitter notifications or browsing to the channel/Subscriptions page will watch it later after the demonetization is fixed.

Here's a theory that just came into my head:

What if, due to all the pressure from major corporates, press, government, etc. to expunge the 'bad stuff' ("remove copyrighted content!", "remove terrorist propaganda!", "remove content exploiting children!", and so on) on their platform, YouTube are performing radical experiments with regard to content recognition and filtering algorithms, and are using the whole 'request a manual review' process as some kind of feedback or training for these new algorithms?

Alternatively, another thing that comes to mind is that perhaps their hand has been forced into relying too much on algorithms because of trouble Google have been having with their outsourced moderating and review staff? Google apparently has (or had) a huge number of staff they call 'Raters' that provide human feedback to all their ranking, categorisation and filtering algorithms all across Google's services. It surely can't be coincidence that this YouTube 'Adpocalypse' comes at a time during which a (or the?) major company providing staff for this stuff, LeapForce, has tanked and been taken over by a rival.
