Let's have a great big EEVblogFORUM meet, greet and buy/swap Electronics get together!

It should be big enough for that!

You could even make a nice youtube video of the meet up.

You can now receive mailbag deliveries by the cargo container load.

I had a massive container load of electronics goodies, gathering dust.

Since I managed to find the delivery address of Altium, I've already sent it off to you. The shippers tell me it weighs about 30 tons.

It should arrive tomorrow, I can't remember the date.

1. Laser tag course.
2. Indoor autonomous aerial vehicle test course.
3. Go-kart track (Needs ventilation)
4. Dodgem cars (Doesn't need ventilation)
5. Laser Interferometry
6. Tear-down of 40 channel mixers in the studio
7. Bigger studio area - with lighting and green room
8. BIG junk box
9. Put your dumpsters outside and label them as free e-Waste drop off (to assist with point 8 )
10. Leverage your physical presence for more influence - to increase dumpster finds of the class of the Keysight scopes

You could have said that you had to keep it secret until now. But the Dicks Smith takeover has occurred, with your partners, and you needed the new bigger premises, to use as the head offices and centralized mail order centre.

You need to keep blogging for another 3 years Dave. Then it'll be back to Sydney and they'll be calling.

The old Altium mega HQ in Sydney will still be vacant in 3 years, so I"m hoping the owner will be so desperate to sell that I can snap it up for a song.  ;D

Turn it into a some kind of school/teaching classes for electronics. Building is perfect for that. I bet peple from all over the world would come there, this blog has made you the most recognizible and the most popular electronics guru in the world. People trust you and that is the most important, they would also trust you in the selection of teachers.

Second, continue selling blog labeled multimeters. Try to expand your offer to more models, including analog ones. If you could make blog branded oscilloscopes that would be perfect because that is the area where you really shine.

Why is the place still listed as available?

Lazy advertisers. Tell them to update their site.
While you're at it, tell them to take down that ugly Altium sign.

Real estate agents aren't necessarily quick off the mark in updating listings - unless its a new listing.  Even if they do get inquiries on this place, they can offer alternatives.  If an interested party has made contact, they'll not waste the opportunity!

They are awful at updating listings, truly awful, all the agents, not just a few.
I've enquired about places that were leased more than year ago  :palm:

Although the virtual tour link is a nice touch.
Btw. didn't I see a thread, where precisely that was joked about?

It would take at least one FTE (full-time equivalent) person(s) just to manage/clean that building.
Its a beautiful space, but not very practical for subdivision or more industrial uses like hackerspace or makerspace, etc.
I didn't see any mention of an elevator or disability accessibility, etc.

To be honest I might have been suckered if you'd said you'd got one floor of it. The whole building would bankrupt you even if you got the lease for free.

You sneaky bugger Dave! It ant even April 1st here in Brisbane. You got my all exited for nothing :(.

I was going to ask about the possibility of fans coming down for a tour (I'm still sad) and putting the tour date next to the Sydney maker fair. On the plus side, it reminded me about that, I should probably set a reminder so I don't forget. I've done that 2 years in a row now.

With all the junk stuff in your existing lab it'll take ages to move, possibly a whole year.   Maybe completed by 1st April 2017 ?

I think you should use it for the production of your newly announced line of EEVBlog solar road surfaces. It's truly amazing how simple the solution to the downfalls turned out to be.

EDIT:Anyone have a clue why this only just turned up in my YouTube subscription feed maybe 10 minutes ago?

Nice find, I think you should latch on the Federal Government initiative on ideas and innovation boom. Maybe concentrate on the electronics industry giving startups a place to get stuff off the ground.

Price for the 2nd floor only seems to be about AUD 385000, so the whole shebang probably goes for more than a million AUD.
Youtube must be paying well, or is it patreon?  ;D

I PM'ed him, and he explained how he paid for it.

He managed to find 31+2=33 $15,000+extras Keysight scopes just lying in a dumpster nearby, and managed to either swap/barter them or sell them, to pay for the rent. That is why the Keysight prizes, haven't shipped yet.

Lower down in the PM, Dave says "please keep this secret". Oops...
Sorry Dave.

Nice one, Dave

Though if I had the money, I'd probably move down there in a heartbeat.

(I knew it was too good to be true, but would have been nice had it been.)

Since it has a great view, convert part of the building into apartments? Use Kickstarted for funding the purchase and renovation?

Probably those 3$ Shenzhen Special multimeters he sells for 300$ a piece  :-DD

When the company I work for moved to a different location I looked into renting the old workshop area. Turns out with my budget I could basically just get a single parking spot in the garage. It was a cheap generic building in a shitty location. No wonder the vacancy rate of office/light industry buildings is so bad.

Hey Dave.,
You can make it into a hack (not a typo) space.
But I have feeling Dave is going to have "surprise expenses" this weekend and will have to immediately down-size again.

ps. A good one Dave. You had me "hook, line" but not sinker. When it is tooo good to be true, I smell bullshit.   ;)

Don't turn it on, take it apart! (Joke or not, you can still make a teardown, only difference being that you don't need to put it back together)

Even though it sounded too good to be true i automatically believed it for a sec and thought you must be crazy thinking you could use all that area enough to make it pay off. Only after checking my calendar and realizing the time difference i was like:  :palm:

Good one!

Empty for 4 years? Hmm... what are the squatting laws like in Oz? We could have an international band of hippy electronics nerds shacking up in the place. Only rules of joining the commune are you bring lab gear, components, food, and your own sleeping bag. Yeah, some toiletries too. I can imagine all that nerd sweat stinking the place out.  :-DD

Can't you rent out a part to a local makerspace or some Electrical engineering students? Pays for part of the building and it's always handy to have them around.   :)

Shame - I thought the April fool this year would be Dave getting one of the first Batterizers off the production line for tear down and review.

Still, maybe you could do that next year

Black Rustenburg Granite, and what is not black granite is glass, probably not with an IR reflective coating of gold on it either.  Must have a nice big set of Sulzer water coolers on the roof or out at the rear as well to dump the heat into the ambient. 2kW fan motor per unit, and a nice 2kW water circulation pump along with the 20kVA of compressor load as well.

Crossed my mind too, but unless he found himself a big sponsor (Altium, maybe  ;) ), I don't think that's going to happen. But it would be a nice surprise, though...

If it were real you could do your own Sparkfun or Adafruit type thing.  Fill it up with parts and design your own doodads to sell.  I'm sure you could fit plenty of pick-n-place machines, ovens, and whatnot.

I've been watching Dave since he was back in his garage. So it would be cool to see him go from there to that big building.  I wish it were real, it would be cool.   Maybe some day, Dave! ;)

Yep, lousy for transport as many have found out. The occasional bus and that's about it.
And unless the Guvmint was planning on building apartments in Garrigal NP, the population density there is very low (which is the attraction of the area).

Better off leasing it out as upmarket stables, as there are loads of wealthy horse owners in that area! :)
Was it really supposed to do that?

We still don’t know if given the opportunity whether Dave would actually occupy the site based on the travel distance and perhaps other unknown factors, anyway one of my few luxuries in life nowadays is the forum and also a number of Youtube sites so today I took out a lottery ticket in case they decide to sell, not sure if four million will cover it but it should go close, so people just for luck cross your wires and hope for the best.

Yes Altium are furious. So furious that they have shelved/cancelled plans to give all EEVblog moderators, free for life (£5,000), Altium PCB licences. I guess know one is affected by that ?

Modern means of communications, such as emails and forums, make lots of opportunity for misunderstandings to arise.

Also I tend to get the impression, that what we find funny/humorous in the UK, is somewhat different to the humor in the USA, and some other countries.

IT'S A COUP! Unbelievable.

Dave, sublet it to the Australian electronics R & D industry. It could become a EE technology park. Electronics only. No software only businesses, just electronics and firmware development companies. Get funded by the government too, as part of the so-called push to reinvigorate the electronics industry in Australia.

I would be tempted to move down to Sydney from up here in Melbourne to run my electronics business there.

Dave, you won't lose. (Except you might have a lot of lawn mowing to do!).

Hang on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's April fool's day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

May be something like this:

This is the garage where HP started.

Jay_Diddy_B

And that is how HP will end up. They lost the plot ever since Carly Fiorina took over.

With all the unused space, you could build a monstrously HUGE fish tank!
When you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective.

Dave could rent out space to electronic firms with the condition that Dave is allowed to make YT videos of their work.  It would be a tremendous win win for everyone.

Dave would need to add a health hazard alert in large bold letters at the beginning of that tear down video: "Warning! Might contain Ghostbusters 2016 material."

LAN parties?

EDIT: But the old fashioned way with 10BASE2, T-pieces and terminators -- Spend the first 3 hours diagnosing connection issues until you get the shits and just solder the 50 ohm resistor directly onto the two end NICs.

I guess we'll first have a video where Dave does a tour and shows his minions working in every department doing mailbag items (including the Dundee knife), dumpster diving, equipment teardowns (including Dave's coffee maker), skate boarding on solar roadways... did I forget something?

Why would it be a joke? Dave has made absolutely millions from his Youtube videos, the monthly rental on that place is like pocket money for him!  It'll just take him a few days to move everything in to the new space and sort the decorating out.

Using Google street view to look down the road where that Altium place is located, everything seems to be for sale or for lease. Must be a real black spot.

That's because it's a business park built away from transport links and population centres. Apart from the hardware store in the area, everything else is pretty quiet there.
Was it really supposed to do that?

Oh course. There has been a long tradition at least in past electronic magazines of the past era to publish a realistic sounding story that was not so outlandish as to be totally unbelievable, but if true a real zinger of a story. This tradition has spread to the internet as magazines are pretty much a thing of the past.

FYI you can set your forum "clock" under your profile to be the same time as Dave's.  I found this to be more useful (maybe not fall for a date fool) than my own local time, so I just re-set mine to Sidney time.

The problem with YT April Fools joke - is for years people will be driving to that building to meet Dave.  I can just imagine how many will drive around it looking for a way to get in.  And future occupants will have to post a sign about this.

We moved to a new floor with 3 times more space. It only took about 6 months until we ran out of space again. No change in personnel count.
You know, since you have all the space, you can run more projects. (no you cannot)

I live in Sydney, furthermore, I live within 20 minutes driving distance of the old Altium building in the video.

At the time of posting the video, Sydney was still in AEDT so UTC+11 which is only beaten by a few other countries, with the highest being UTC+14. So, posting this on the 31st of March UTC+11, it would have been live on the 30th of March in other countries.

This Forum is global.  Date and time issues between members is not a mystery.

The original post was made at a time when the date was April 1, somewhere on the planet, which would seem to be valid for a global forum.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't know if I'm uniquely prescient, but around the last week in March I was strongly expecting April to occur soon.  So when I saw unlikely-looking statements I definitely considered the possibility of April fool jokes.  Anyone who didn't was proper fooled, and shouldn't complain!

It wasn't days before, just hours - and how many hours depended on where in the world you are.  From minus a couple (for those east of NZ) to plus 20 or so for Hawaii.

(It's late here - so apologies for not being more precise.)

How do you see the tags of youtube videos?? I don't see tags there!  ???

I knows this thread is now old, but I use a Chrome extension called "Tags for YouTube™". You can also find them in the page's source code under keywords.

It's NOT a fraud.

He has had to cancel the order/contract for the building, because he discovered that the height of the building is TOO low, for his later planned, equipment survivability from being thrown from the top of the building, test videos.
A rumor is floating about, that he is trying to acquire a new, 300 metre high skyscraper, for later test videos. (N.B. this post may be a joke).

I would have renamed it to "Dave Tower" instead of an EEVBlog logo.... ;)
When you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective.

Hi Dave, Once you move in to the new Lab, We need to see a tear down of this

Dave would need to add a health hazard alert in large bold letters at the beginning of that tear down video: "Warning! Might contain Ghostbusters 2016 material."

But I loved the original GB's... I just hope it doesn't become like Star Trek©™ with their TOS, TNG etc...
