Responses to vblogs in multiple locations
« on: June 11, 2012, 05:25:58 am »
Does anyone else feel that having multiple locations to respond to Dave's vblog is frustrating to keep track of?  There are threads on this forum, YouTube comments, and on the the "Episodes" page (which is always slightly behind on new episodes).  Am I missing any other locations that I'm not aware of?  I wish there was only one location...

Unfortunately that's just the way it is.
The only way to consolidate them would be to funnel them into either the blog site or forum (Youtube won't let you really)
And it's a one-way medium. So if someone comments in Youtube, and it was funnelled into the forum and someone replies to that comment on the forum, then the original poster on Youtube will never see it.
And I'm not about to disable any of them, as many people would be upset, and prefer there particular location.
And if I do funnel them, then no doubt many people will get upset with say the blog comment being inundated with say youtube comments.

Dave.

Ok, I've found a script to import all the Youtube comments into Wordpress, and it will be updated every hour. So by the time I post the Wordpress version, there should be a bunch of imported Youtube comments available.

Let me know what you think.

I just realised a problem with this, that's unique to me. I now have to wade through all the Youtube comments on wordpress that I've likely already read. *sigh*

I don't think there's much you can do about YouTube comments. What you could is somehow consolidate the comments made on the site. Disable comments in Wordpress, at least for new episodes that you're posting from now on. After each new episode, create a new thread in the forum for that episode (instead of waiting for a user to do it). Enable posting for non-registered users in this particular subforum.
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

That's an interesting idea, although I suspect the subforum would soon be bombarded with spam, based on how often my Wordpress blog and forum get attacked already (hundreds of times per day)

I'm guessing it would be no different than the blog. I guess you could set up Akismet to filter unregistered users' comments in the forum. There's probably no existing Akismet port for the forum software you're using, but I could possibly see if I could help you with that, if you think it's a good idea, etc. And even if you stick to the existing system, I highly recommend that you install Akismet as well wp-hascash which together stop a lot of spam.

I've thought this for a while - on the basis that the Youtube and Forum are pretty essiential, and serve slightly different purposes, maybe there is a case for disabling the Wordpress comments and just directing people to Youtube for general comments and the forum for more detailed discussion?

Alternatively I wonder if there would be a way to have a comments box on the Wordpress that just pushed comments through to Youtube somehow?

I would guess not. You can't push it back using the person own name. You might be able to set up a bot that pushes back comments that all have the same username, but that is likely to be detected as spam/abuse by YouTube's control mechanisms. And you would lose any links and anything above 500 characters minus the username. Not to mentions that people who don't know what's going on would be confused about these comments. All in all not a very good idea, I think.

The advantage with Wordpress comments is that you don't have the sign up for anything. So it caters for the signup-phobic members. And then you wouldn't be able to reply to someone Youtube comment there if you disabled them.
I don't generally get a huge number on Wordpress anyway, and I don't want to take anyway anyone outlet for comments generally.

I don't think that's possible, as you need a Youtube account to do it, so there would be no transparent of who wrote it.
At least with the Youtube --> Wordpress direction, you get a link to the persona Youtube username and channel.
Youtube probably won't like it either I suspect.

Dave.

It's been annoying me for some time now, but I think it should just stay the way it is, maybe just with disabling wordpress comments. There's no easy and complete fix for that, though some web coder wizards might be able to do partial integration between those places.

Make it so when you upload a new video, it makes a new topic on forum.

Comments on blog get posted on forum as a reply (Or better yet show forum replys and a link to forum post),  YT comments disabled for new videos with a link to the forum post :)

Just my £0.02.

The post in the blog should include a link to the relevant video forum topic and have comments disabled.
Blog does not get much comments anyway and disabling youtube comments is out of the question.

Here are my habits:
- at first I visited the main blog site exclusively
- later I realized that the videos appeared sooner on youtube
- because of this I subscribed to your yt channel and get updates on my phone for new yt video uploads
- a lot later I created my forum account and setup RSS for forum posts (unrelated to competitions I reported a security issue).

The comments on blogs and youtube are unfortunately, not worth linking too.  I cannot search through posts but worst, the noise over signal is deafening.  Because the posters do not commit in some modicum way to the site, it attracts a good share of trolls.
Best Wishes,
