Title: Teardown Tuesday at my university
Post by: tom66 on October 18, 2012, 07:38:05 pm
Well, not exactly on Tuesdays... it's a Wednesday session...  ;)

But anyway, my ELEC1410 teacher told us that Wednesday has a special booking just for teardown work. We will be disassembling a mobile phone, and a DVD player (one per group) to figure out what makes them tick. I'll try and get pics.

Obviously inspired by EEVblog. Dave, I think you should be worried.  :P

I'm studying at the University of Leeds btw. ELEC1410 is communication systems (first year Electronics & Electrical Engineering course.)

It's not the Agilent lab is it? Maybe you all should do a teardown of the equipment in the lab instead ::)

No, it's not in that lab, boring seminar room (though more like a classroom: http://www.teachingspace.leeds.ac.uk/room_details.asp?ID=1-01-086-2525-03%20-352 (http://www.teachingspace.leeds.ac.uk/room_details.asp?ID=1-01-086-2525-03%20-352))

BTW, don't put an apostrophe in that URL, you might be a little upset at the programmer(s) ;).

I think they are in the process of demolishing an old building to bring a new "Energy Engineering" building up (this building is for environmental studies, power studies, like renewable energy, solar cells, etc. Only a 2-year MSc course I believe, with very basic electronics theory.)

We've still got the old mining department here, even though it's completely unused (closed in 2002 from what I heard, due to lack of demand.) I don't know what they are planning to do with the "Old Mining Building".

As promised, pictures from the teardown...

Our lecturer knew a lot about these (8th year running) and was quick to point out the majority of decisions were based on cost saving.

It was a Bush player, but I am not sure who the actual OEM is for it. We also took apart the remote to understand its functionality and noticed a bodge: the resonator had been soldered on the bottom, instead of the top where all the other through hole components were. The reason was quite simple, if it had been on the top it would have stopped you putting the batteries in.  ::)

Crappy electrolytics, I wonder how long they will last... these have never been used, purchased exclusively for the teardowns. Power cord cut to stop curious students electrocuting themselves, I guess.

Or getting eye damage from the laser  ;)

There was a warning inside the DVD player, presumably from the manufacturer. The laser power is low enough that accidental exposure is not harmful, continuous exposure however can be.

Nice one Tom!   Leeds is a great place;  I went for an interview for a BA in Fine Art there once, many years ago!  Good luck with your course! ;-)

That is true for a DVD player.  DVD Writer lasers are all together another beast.  They are good ways to pop balloons from a distance.  :)
