YouTube sucks - Can't watch live feed
« on: June 02, 2014, 03:27:26 am »
Hi I just wanted to ask if anyone else is having problems with watching the live feeds via YouTube.

I always have problems watching videos anyway, so I am using an extension for my browser (Prox Tube) that proxies my connection, as YouTube always thinks I'm in Germany when I am not.

But now when I try and watch the current live episode, I am getting "Blocked in my country due  to rights issues" or if I use the extension I get an "An Error Occured, Please try again".

Aaaarrrgghh!

(Edit)

Finally managed to watch after I connected via a VPN...

I think to that youtube is not the best choice to stream live.

A better choice is justin.tv / twitch.tv
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin.tv
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/twitch.tv

This pages have no restrictions for viewers and everybody is able to watch the stream without create an account.
You have only to create an account if you want to use the built in Chat.

There are rumors that youtube/google will buy thes sites to get the streaming able to run properly.

Just my 2 (euro)cents.

Twitch is only for game streaming.
Justin.tv is for general content.

Youtube allows you to stream 720p or even higher and it works well for everyone and have a very small amount of ads, unlike ustream that has popups or cuts stream completely to run a 10-15s ad every 15 minutes or so. Twitch/Justin is just slightly better, but still shows ads a lot.
Youtube also makes the recorded stream available almost right away, I believe with justin.tv/twitch you need some pro account to do that, which costs money.

Also, Youtube works well for Dave because all subscribers receive notifications when they check Youtube automatically - more people watch live streams this way. A lot of people don't check the eevblog website or the forum to learn about when the next live stream will be, in the past lots of people missed live shows because of this.

Yeah, some countries like Germany won't be able to watch live.

Dave, if Wirecast doesn't support it, you could use something like Open Broadcast Software to stream 720p 2-3mbps to Youtube and at the same time stream 360p or 480p 1mbps to Ustream or another website.  That would make everyone happy.

I only knew the situation at twitch.
There is the difference between pro account and general account that the user is able to select the resolution and the streamer is allowed to enable comercials to earn some money.
General streamer are able to stream at 720p or even higher but have to think about the viewer with slow connections because everybody have to watch at streaming-resolution.

Twitch.tv belong to Justin.tv.
I think there is no big difference.

As far I knew, Justin.tv and twitch.tv ony shows commercials at streaming start and streaming end.
(And when the streamer have a pro accaunt and want to show commercials.)

PS.: Youtube live don't work in Austria :(

Twitch.tv and Justin.tv are sending E-Mails when the stream is starting.

Dave use multiple sites to stream your live shows, shouldn't be a problem with that upload now. Before with ADSL2+ this could have been a real issue since you could only barely stream decent on ustream. Might choke down that already 80% cpu usage quad core, but by testing you can only fail.
Stream with youtube and stream with ustream keeps everyone happy? Or go crazy and justin.tv, youtube and ustream?
https://manycam.com/applications/?view=ustreamtv I've heard many people use this software

"When ManyCam is your video source you can use your webcam with multiple applications and websites simultaneously. For example you can use MSN, Skype, and Justin.tv simultaneously with ManyCam."

EDIT:
nvm

this sounds like a good option, since there is enough bandwidth. But more streams is more things to keep eye on and more to go wrong.

Twitch/Justin is just slightly better, but still shows ads a lot.

Streamer can choose when to show adds. Some streamers dont show adds because it annoys their viewers and they want to keep their viewers happy.

Yes, that sums it all up perfectly.
Sorry for those who are restricted in their country  >:(

On Ustream I can't chose when to show ads. To get them removed costs a LOT of money.

yes, but you have to sign up for them.
I can tell people a million times to sign up and when the live show is on and where etc, but they still won't do it  ::)

Seems I misspoke, at the moment Open Broadcaster Software can not stream to 2 separate locations at same time. Seems like it's in development.

Must have mixed them up in my head, but I can't remember exactly which software supports that.  It may have been Real Helix Producer (Pro), but it's not free (about 500$/euro)

I did some digging (one google search with magical words to be exact)

the tutorial:
https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-set-up-your-own-private-rtmp-server-using-nginx.50/
forum thread discussing it:
https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/how-to-set-up-your-own-private-rtmp-server-using-nginx.12891/

I hope it's not too complicated to setup, don't use raspberry pi, use something with more grunt like anything with better than Pentium 2 processor. Maybe have the computer all setup so you only need to boot it up when you want to stream to multiple sites.

That will duplicate the stream to both services, so for example both services will receive the 720p 2-3 mbps stream.  Dave only has 8mbps upload bandwidth, and 6 mbps may be too much, causing temporary slowdowns.

Still, that solution is quite interesting, as it doesn't involve doing a second video compression which would use more processing power.

Without it, a solution I thought about was doing the normal streaming with the option of saving a MP4 to disk, and then using a second computer reading the MP4 as it's saved to disk to play it and stream it to the other server (either read directly from mp4 or just play it and have the streaming software capture the video player).

That Real Helix Producer is designed to produce multiple streams at the same time during encoding  so that only a bit more processing power is used for the second stream (most of the analysis on video is the same for both).  At least it had this functionality years ago when I last used it, in the AMD Barton/ P4 times .. I remember streaming soccer matches at 720x576 1mbps to fellow students in the university campus and streaming 320x240 ~ 300kbps to some friends through the internet.
The 576p used about 75-80% cpu of a Barton 1.8Ghz and the 320x240 stream added about 10%.

Dave also has this dedicated server on which he runs this forum and wordpress blog. Maybe he could run that on this server? Only one rtmp stream required.  Since it's the nginx that is streaming to those services could have as many streams as he wanted, but not streaming directly from his server since "100 Mbps Uplink" isn't that much to play with. I think it's some Debian based system anyways so that tutorial linked above should work without any problems.

But bad thing would be more stress on this server and more things to go wrong. This is not the most stable service from what I've experienced.
