[WTB] High Voltage Cable and Connectors (20-60kV)

Hi. I'm looking for specialist high voltage cable and connectors. Please also let me know if you see where to purchase this from at reasonable prices. In particular i thought scrap power transmission cable may be found..

Cable:
20-60kV, low current (i.e. any size central conductor is fine, prefer 22-18AWG to fit connectors).
Short length is enough, a few m.
Especially:
6mm OD, 30kV shielded
10mm OD, 65kV shielded

Alternatively any advice on finding suitably rated non-shielded cable (silcone etc) and then shielding it would be appreciated.

Connectors:
Those used in specialist HV supplies such as Heinzinger, Matsusada, Spellman, Fug etc.

In particular:

Heinzinger HVS65 (65kV)

Masusada CN-30-MHVP (30kV)

Alternatively anyone with experience fabricating such HV plugs would be appreciated.

What are you planning to do with this cable?
How much voltage and current will be applied to the cable?
AC / DC?
EMI problems?

There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.

No personal experience.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

Wow, 50nF 40kV Polystyrene caps!  :o  Interesting site.

As HighVoltage mentioned, the frequency of use, dc or ac is quite important here. Note that most HV cables you'll find on farnell, etc... specify the DC rating not the AC. Sometimes they don't say, and they mean DC.

If you want to be on the safe side, with very low capacitive loss, go for used x-ray tube cables, rated for 75kV. Probably thicker than you want as these also include filament wires inside.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sorry, I should have mentioned that it is DC only and low current (20mA max, part is for a voltmeter connection so negligible current). Initially I only need upto 30kV 5mA.

However, I want to shield it to screen against EMI when switching the supply on/off or if there is ever any arcing, to provide safety in case the cable is damaged, and also the connectors to the PSU and Voltmeter expect shielded cable.

I had seen HVStuff website already. However, I wasn't entirely convinced about their shielded cable. It says "The shielding layer with shielded high voltage cable is used for restraining vibration of parallel current, and grounding is forbidden.". I can't make sense of this. The equipment and connectors I have expect an outer shield which will be grounded.

I suppose I could buy the non-shielded but high-rated cable and thread it through a braided stainless steel hose. I notice that a semi-conducting layer is present in some of these cables so I could also wrap the cable in semi-conducting tape.

Thanks very much for your replies.

Thanks, I will have a look for these.
