[WTB] KPT-20 Kenwood Radio Frequency Programmer
« on: June 25, 2017, 03:28:57 pm »
Okay, so I need one of these to program some (old as hell) Kenwood TK-720 radio. I know this is not a place to look for ham or radio stuff but who know, somebody might have one. Or know the place to get one. Or how to hack this thing so I can program the EPROM directly without buying the expensive programmer.

Can you confirm the model number? I'm aware of a TKR-720 (repeater) and a TKB-720 (basestation), but not a TK-720 (which following Kenwood conventions should be a VHF mobile radio).

You should be able to read out the Frequency EEPROM with an EEPROM programmer. You'll need to check what EEPROM your radio has fitted -- my TKR-820 had a Rohm 93SC46, which will program as an ST 93SC46 (the latter seems to be more widely supported).

In the case of the TKR-820 - this uses some kind of Hirose connector I haven't been able to identify. I soldered on a Molex KK connector with a bit of wire, then made a jumper which went from that to an 8pin DIP with the EEPROM's pinout.

Here's the pinout for the TKR-820:

Code: [Select]
TKR-820 front panel EEPROM connector:

  8  6  4  2
  7  5  3  1

1: DO (EEPROM pin 4) - red
2: DI (EEPROM pin 3) - yellow
3: CLK (EEPROM pin 2) - green
4: EN1 (EEPROM pin 1) - blue
5: EN2 - not connected
6: RST - connect to GND to hold unit in reset (programming mode). Float for normal operation.
7: GND (EEPROM pin 5) - black
8: no-connect

If the EEPROM is socketed, just unplug the thing and plug it into the EEPROM programmer :)

You can probably use the KPG-21D programming software to create an EEPROM image. I'd read what you have out and keep it as a backup first so you can put the radio back as it was.

The file created by the KPG-21D programming software contains the Frequency data in the first half, and the Signalling data in the second half. I have no idea if the TK-720 supports CTCSS...

If the EEPROM format isn't the same, this might help you a little: http://www.repeater-builder.com/kenwood/tkr-n20-bit-banging/tkr-n20-bit-banging.html

Cheers,
Phil.

Apparently there's a TK-720 which uses a 2764 EPROM to store the config data. Quoting from http://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=repeater-builder@yahoogroups.com&q=subject:%22%5C%5BRepeater%5C-Builder%5C%5D+Re%5C%3A+KENWOOD+KPT%5C-20%22&o=newest&f=1 :

John, I'm not sure which radio you want to prg. (TKR/b or TK)?

If you download the KPG21D prg'ing software, it's on various
off shore sites, the file saved by KPG21D has most if not all
the data required to prg. any TKx-x20 radio..

For the TKR/b the 1st half of the file is what's contained
in the Freq. 9346 and the 2nd half of the file is what's in
the CTCSS 9346..

For the TK (Mobile), the 1st half of the file is the freq.
data, but the every other byte is reversed.. Meaning if it's
0123 4567 ... in the file so it will be 2301 6745 in the 9346..
I have a crude exe that takes the file saved by KPG21D and
reverses the bytes for the Mobile 9346..

The 2764? ver. for the TK mobile w/scan is a bit more involved
but the freq. data is the same as the TK mobile its just spread
out..

I hope to write a super exe that takes the file and make image
files of the Eproms and in reverse for the whole TKx-x20 line..

Sorry if this is not what you were looking for..

my radio is a TK-720 base radio and it use a 27C64 EPROM, that is why I have trouble with the ROM content
