Lots of gear from "GrandPa's Lot"
« on: January 16, 2019, 03:22:38 am »
UPDATE: MARCH 13, 2019.

I HAVE DELETED ALL OF MY ACTIVITY WITHIN THIS THREAD, ADMIN PLEASE LOCK OR DELETE.

I am removing all the items for sale and all of my posts and I will not sale anything else via this forum. My apologies to those I offended but more importantly to those who wanted to buy the gear but now cannot. This lot was the worst buy I have made so far as it is not worth the trouble and BS I have received.

I will not start another thread under this tab.

Just drooling as my pocket isn't that deep enough  :'(

About the Fluke 731D , better check the battery inside, who knows what happened to those old cells ? Leak ? Corrosion ?  At least to protect your investment. There are few threads if I'm not mistaken in this forum about this beast, just search for it.

Guess I should post the gut shots.

Yep, pretty sure this will improve potential buyers appreciation, as the devil is in the details.

Good luck with your sales.  :-+

I'm interested in the resistance standards, and maybe the 731D. I'm uk based though. Please PM about customs etc.

Those resistance standards look great. Shame it would cost me my liver and a lung in import duties here in sweden :-( Good luck with the sale.

What do you want for the Fluke 322?  I need a calibration standard.

Fluke 8502 & 2- 8506 units for parts. I CAN go through and test them all but really don't want to.

If you need just a card or parts, please let me know. I have two STACKED units myself and want to se others bring these back to life.

$$$$$ = free, just pay shipping, for parts only, I will NOT send all 3 of these units to one hoarder.

MUCH LOVE & Sharing is key
I need a Current measurement card ("Current Shunts") for my 8505a. Mine has the option stamped on the back panel, but the actual card is missing. 8505a and 8506a are identical except for the RMS conversion.

I'm (sadly) not interested in any of this kit but am following avidly. However, I am puzzled as to how this:

Quote
since the HP3456A are so cheap on eBay, I think its better than I keep these units. I cannot consider $100 for a calibrated, 6.5 digit DMM fair

squares with your previous statement that you wanted to share with members hereabouts at cost only. If, say $25 (to pick an extreme) covered your expenses (with the rest of the stuff sold) wouldn't that fulfill your intent?

Update: since the HP3456A are so cheap on eBay, I think its better than I keep these units. I cannot consider $100 for a calibrated, 6.5 digit DMM fair, especially since the next best thing is the 3458

Have you overlooked the 3457? Or does it have more noise?

The 3456A are getting fairly long in the tooth and there was a lot of them made. In your shoes @inverted go to the bother of testing them against a few basic standards you have and they are then worth more than the 'for parts' units on evilbay say $150'ish wouldn't be out of order 'tested'. Flog them and buy a single more bench/SWMBO friendly 34401A ;)

Questioning someone's actions like that was just rude.

They have no obligation to tell you anything of what they do behind the scenes and just because you don't see what you expect does not give you any right to question them about it.

It is simple arrogance to feel so 'entitled'.

Best way to deal with this is just drop it if you don't like it, you know.

But since you mention it

does not give you any right to question them about it

Had you not got 8K posts behind you I'd have to ask if you were new to EEVBlog! There is even a sticky thread in this very topic where posters seems to believe they do have the right to ask questions. And their targets don't get the chance to answer them.

I think it's a fair question after what was said in public to the forum and original owner. I'd be interested to see what is being kept and sold as well. I'm not interested in buying any of it.

Indeed...hope they eBay it out...actually hope the moderators delete the thread...the pity story, and death, and buying my first car, gets pretyy damn old. I offered them eactly what the asked for....cash for the entire lot...blah blah.

IMO: The most expensive items you have are the radios, so take special care to get those checked out. The other test gear adds up quickly at around $300-$500 each, even in "needs repair" condition. If some of those units are fully functional, you can get $1K plus. This is an amazing collection and if we can still make a deal for it all, than I am very interested; have cash and a trailer. I do not want to buy and "flip" these myself, I want to repair and use what I keep. The rest can go "at cost" to the rest of the community.

Has anyone worked out approximately what it's really worth?

Inverted18650's house is going to look like this for a bit  :-DD

(from Resident Evil)

I am going to take you all up on the offers!

I am officially extending an invite to three-four-five people to come play with everything and help me find out what is working, whats not, and help with valuation. I just do not think I can do it all myself. Time and date TBD, but in the very near future. I hope it will be a fun meet-n-greet. Almost all the gear is HP, Fluke and Tek. Specifically looking for a person(s) (guy or gal) who can help with the spectrum analyzers and signal generators, HAM radios, and any volt-nuts into DC standards. I will provide the food and beverages and we can all hang out and play with this 'once in a lifetime lot.' Though my wife's cooking is good, since she is allowing me leave the stuff strewn all over the place, quite literally, we will eat out for two meals, on me. Please see the warning below.

Warning: I 'space out' from time to time and the medication I take helps but doesn't cure it (my brain has been irreparably bruised). I grew up a 'shit-kicking surfer' and had a laid back vibe, until the military; now I don't sleep well and suffer severe depression. I am a nice guy in general, but I cannot stand "know it all, do it my way now, closed minded people" and I will quickly put you in your place; I have dealt with enough of that for many lifetimes. If you like to talk down to people, please stay away. I tell you this now so you are aware and know what I expect. Be respectful of everyone and it'll be a blasty-blast. If there are items you want to buy, please talk to me in advance, and we can make it happen. edit* and I have a dog and cat. Husky breed, sheds a lot.

I'll leave this here too. I spent $8400 for the gear, and another $400 in travel costs. You all can do the math. I have also extended open offers to "PICK SOMETHING YOU LIKE" to several forum members, including EEVBLOG, and I will give them the gear and pay shipping. Thats all I'll say about the matter, all you haters, go get a life!

I may be interested in a "HP 3408B with 3482A DC range unit" if you still have one.
But first, two questions.. How much do you want and will you ship to Japan? :)

(It would look nice sitting there on my bench with the 5340A complete with nixies that I am currently restoring.)

Fluke 382A_DC_Voltage_&_Current Standard: pictures are worth 1000 words... 1fV-50V's
still playing with this one, I can get it to respond at the fV level on the HP3456A! woohoo

Sorry to be "that guy" but do you mean it responds on the 10uV range? I think with six dials and a 5V range the best you get is there. Or are you looking at AC ripple noise on the output?

Hmmmm, it does do 5mA full scale, so it does do 10nA resolution, which is pretty darn impressive.

Boonton Power-Meter Calibraor 25A, HP 435A Power Meter with 8484A Probe and 11708A Termination.

***just checking calibration of the probe here @ 1uW***

more testing to come but baseline results look good.

Just an FYI here - Minimum frequency for the 8484A is 10MHz and the Boonton is a 1MHz output so that will impact the reading. In the 8480 series of sensors you want an 8482 as it covers 1MHz. I'm not sure how far out the 8484A will be as while I have 8484A's I also have 8482A's for below 10MHz.

Unit looks in good condition though - Please PM me if you can't come to agreement with 4thDoctor on a price for the unit as I think it might be useful for my Dad in his wireless shack (I also have a 432A-H76 so I can set the 50MHz output on the power meters directly).

Good luck with the rest of the gear.

Happy to help. I still have that 8672A from the video (I replaced it with an 8673B). They're good units and fairly straight forward once you get the understanding of the user interface.

For sure! I have 4 of them that need some work. Yes that’s right FIVE total. Four needs some love but one is stacked, minus current shunts card, but the case it is in a bit banged up. Make me an offer I can’t refuse and I’ll send them FOUR of them your way, if you'd like of course. (One has been set aside for another forum friend).

***edit: another forum member just requested the working unit, so I will have four that I will post shortly so so can see the various states and functionality.

Hmmm, I wouldn't even know what a reasonable offer is.
I might bow out as I don't even know what these are worth.....

Oh man thats you? Right on, well I have the same HP5342A as well!

That 5342A will go from 10Hz to 500MHz on input 2 and 500MHz 10 18GHz on input 1 - In fact they actually overlap at the 500MHz point and you'll be able to go over 18GHz at the top - My 5342A went to around 24GHz before it stopped (you will need to increase the incoming power though as you go past 18GHz and you need to be careful to ensure that you don't blow the front as they are pretty much unobtanium now**). If you have option 002 (it will usually be marked on the back of the unit) then you can also do amplitude checking up the 18GHz limit with that unit - Again, mine was good enough for government work even after all these years (no where near as accurate as my 8480 series sensors etc though).

One suggestion that might help move the gear is to check on eBay for what these items have actually sold for (not the asked price, use the sold/completed values) and set an initial price there.

TonyG

** There is a guy rebuilding front ends but I can't remember if he is still doing it etc

You don't have a Yaesu FT-817 in all that do you?  The 857 is more power than I want as I have a 991A. The photo of the big stack of gear along the wall really didn't provide a way of telling what you had for sale.

My biggest problem is over the past 18 months I've already bought about $12K of gear and I've pretty much run out of space.  I'd like to get a 2nd 3478A so I can monitor both voltage and current, but after that it starts getting rather self indulgent.  I've got a pair of 34401As, so the 3478As are just for monitoring the power to a device from the PSU which only reads to 4 digits.

I'd love to have the resistance standards, but just no way I could justify spending what they are worth.

The 817 runs 5 watts off AA cells down to under 9 V.  Which is why I decided I wanted one.  I can reduce the power output of the 991A, but the current drain is still quite high for long term battery operation.

Except for a 2nd 3478A to monitor the bench PSU I'm set do to everything I can think of up to 3 GHz.  And I'm really almost completely out of space.  All I've got left is space for things I build.

But that doesn't keep me from drooling.

I am fence sitting.  There are a couple of things I lust after.  BUT.  I already have a pile bigger than Grandpa's stuff with much that needs work.  I really shouldn't, but it there are cool things there.

So far my sensible side is winning.

The fluke 3330B, the reason the output is not latching is probably the electrolytics on the current limit board, at least that's what was wrong with mine. Pretty much every electrolytic is bad.

If you want to get people to drool a little more, check the voltage coming out of the zener reference board, it's in the left row of boards (looking from the front) and has two 2mm banana jack's, red and black, on top to verify the 10V output, perfect for some multimeter probes...

Also, just to check, but you did press down the security switches on the top and bottom of the case (normally held down by the case)? They also prevent you entering OPR

So was it the electrolytics on the current limiter board then? I think the manual says you can even pull the board and run without it (but don't do that without double checking).

Also, watch out for noise on the output (use your AC voltage mode on the DMM to measure this). One of the big black-cardboard covered electrolytics in the middle-back of the system (attached to the mainboard) went open circuit on mine and caused oscillations at the frequency of the pre-regulator. I still have some noise from the chopper due to some bad electrolytics on the regulator board which I couldn't replace yet. It is a game of wackamole hunting down sources of noise but I'm nearly done!

I think there's another lesson .... grab every little bit at the first visit.  I might go so far as to sweep the floor and sort out the wheat from the chaff (and dust) later.  I know it's extra time and effort requiring a bit more space (which you may not have had at the time), but it gets around this problem.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had already swept the area out and tossed anything they felt was useless.  It may be that since they had cleared the bulk and got enough for the stuff you took, that they would be happy to dump the shrapnel.

Of course, there's always the possibility that there could be a legitimate reason why they haven't got back to you yet - and we can only cross our fingers for you.  It would be an extra gesture on their part to honour Grandpa's gear in its finding new homes and purpose.

Edit:
Just read what you posted in the TEA thread.  Doesn't sound like there is any hope.

Unfortunate.

That 419A look like it is in pretty good nick, usually the labels are flaked off on the ones I see for sale. If you're going to keep it then I'd suggest leaving it turned on as this seems best for the photo-conductive chopper's photocells.

That looks to be interesting gear.  How about manufacturer, model no, condition, price, etc? The volt-nut crowd will take particular interest.  Probably at prices far higher than I can justify.

Your subject line is not very descriptive.  I suggest a short heads up in Metrology that you have a bunch of calibration gear for sale. with  links  to the messages with the details for this equipment.

I'll give you my personal situation and my overall take and advice.

1.  I am still mulling a purchase.  But there is nothing there on my have to have list, and the prices aren't forcing me to  buy.  The prices are fair, but not going to make me buy just cuz it is too good a deal to pass up.  I am sympathetic to helping you get out of the hole you have dug trying to help someone out so there is that factoring in my decision.  On top of that I am off to visit family in a day or two so won't try to pull the trigger on anything until I get back in a few weeks.

2.  Patience will be required.  Lots of it.  If you search the buy sell list for my handle you will find a large lot of gear that is available.  You will also find how long it has been there and will find a hint at how much has sold.  Far more has been sold on Ebay than on this forum.  And prices are not comprehensible to me.  Things I think are of low value have sold quickly at relatively high prices.  Other things which seem to have a solid value based on sales have languished for months with no takers even when the price is reduced to a third of the established sold price.  This has been a multi-year journey for me.

One thing which has become obvious.  If the item you are selling has a tie in to the drug world it will sell fairly quickly and at high prices.  Precision scales, lab heaters and other chemistry equipment has sold far better than purely electronics gear.  Of course that also creates an ethical dilemma.  And I don't have any advice or ideas for how to tie the gear you have into that market.

Another example is the
FS:  New TEST EQUIPMENT repair parts.. HP / AGILENT / TEKTRONIX / FLUKE, etc.
thread. It's been around since mid 2017, but still going with parts requests from time to time. So, it's good having this here with what's available.

Changing this thread's title to be more about the kind of gear available (RF, calibration, vintage, etc.) would be beneficial for catching the eye of those passing by who may have an interest, but wouldn't otherwise click to see what's inside "grandpa's lot".

I think the price list is a must if you want to move things in a timely manner. Adding OBO to items where you have some room will help as well. I sometimes will buy something I don't really need because the price was too good to pass up. I don't have a lot of experience in used T&M equip, but if I see the word "Calibrated" and nothing else, I would expect it to have an in-date cal sticker on it, but I maybe be just being naive.  Best of luck.

Do you all prefer the single item with description and price or just the list that is on the top of page 7? Your feedback is welcome. I will SHIP ANYWHERE and do the eBay thing if needed for any or all items, per request. I am here for you to get the gear you want.

YES to all pricing options :-DD

I'm just enjoying seeing all the stuff being presented.

I wouldn't mind a 3456A, but I can't afford it, it's too big for my current work area - and, to be honest, is far more meter than I need (although 4 wire measurement capability would be nice).  Same can be said for a couple of other things.

My needs are mainly vicarious and are being well satisfied just browsing through this thread...

.... if only one episode of a pan to the back of the head would do it.

Unfortunately, I would get "the look" plus a few other not-so-subtle hints over an indeterminate period - as well as pointing to a couple of maintenance jobs around the house that are have been waiting for me.

UM...Id let you have it for $200 Brumby. Shipping isn't important as I already have a box for you headed that way.

Even if you offered it for $50, I'd have to decline.  As I said, it's more meter than I really have a need for - and I am being very hard on myself with new acquisitions.

I know, I know - that's not very TEA of me.   :-[

On a SAD NOTE: just pulled the rear panel from the 7704A, I got in this lot, and found we have a causality.

Hopefully the damage is just in the rear and I can find (or make) new PCBS to replace this shit...so SAD..what a great unit, just mistreated like this.

I suppose I can save and share the parts as well...definitely less of a headache that repairing it. So If you need 7704/7704A parts, I am your guy

Damn, that is some serious carnage. Why do people not take care of expensive stuff? |O

What do we think this guy is worth?

I would say "free" to any collector that has a similar unit in their TEA stash already, just pay shipping. Its too nice to keep as a decor piece, and truth be told, I wil never use it for anything other than fun/learning.

Donate it to a school science lab? Dump it on ebay under vintage science gear as it is nice condition https://www.ebay.com/b/Other-Collectible-Vintage-Scientific-Equipment-1930-Now/414/bn_16564447?LH_TitleDesc=0 worth $50-100 maybe?

That 7704A is a shocker too  :horse: to the person who did that to it.

I'd clean it first. From what is visible it doesn't look like the traces have been eaten away so it may look a lot worse than it is.

I'd take the low resistance standard, and pay shipping. Will "complete the set"... :-P

I doubt that a school would know what to do with it, unless it is on the curriculum. At best it would remain at the back of a cupboard until a kid saw it - and then probably went "eurgh, ark stuff".

That low resistance standard looks to be part of a kelvin double bridge.  Unfortunately possibly missing its ratio set. Yep , im correct.

Yep Bridge element. Back when I was a Boy ....  :-DD

We actually did Bridge measurements in Year 10 Physics with similar gear in spite of having Digital meters available. Good background still today.

It needs to stay stable enough to actually show it. I recently grabbed a load of test equipment and need to work through fixing it and installing it...

By set I meant I'm the guy who got the resistor standards and most of the inductors and capacitance standard too once I finish paying for them.

Yeah, I remember you got all the others. As for stability, it's OK. No lab is ever truly finished. At some point, it'd be great to see it all in its new "home."

Could this be the 2nd half of the Bridge setup? Hard to tell from the older magazine photos but this makes the most sense with what is here. Thank you VgKid and to everyone for the help.

No this one look complete. You connect a battery on the left and unknown resistor on the right.

Kosmic is correct , the 4285 is a self contained kelvin bridge. Just add a battery

Ahem, thanks for pointing out it's great cost, as always it's the prices they're actually selling for, not what they're listed at that's important. I just bought a fully working 66311B for £100, but ago keysight tell me it's worth thousands 😁.

As I don't really need it, just wanted to add it to the standards, I'm happy to see it sold to fund inverted's TEA or given to someone who can make a better case for it!

so maybe this is the other half, its quite large though. (i think its another self contained WSB).

It is a nice lot of gear to the right person and worthy of a good home but the skills to drive it will become lost to the Physics nerds before long which is a shame. Not even sure if Bridge measurements are still taught more than in passing anymore :'(

@Conrad Hoffman springs to mind as someone who may have an idea for a good home including his own ;)

I believe the temperature calibration standards still require the use of a bridge, at least that's according to a researcher I know who helped redefine the Boltzmann constant a decade or so ago. I told him I had a DMM7510 and he was very excited but was sort-of disappointed with its resistance range (!), as temperature work requires more precision.

There is still a place for bridge methods and even the use of Null meters with them over Digital meters but it is a topic well worth it's own thread :)

Really? Mine was cal'd Nov, and I only just bought it too. That's disappointing...
You've got to have some grounds for getting a partial refund or a fresh cal from the supplier? Is it ok to sell out of cal meters?
